Friday, September 11, 2026 - memorial moments for the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy, NJ/NY

My day started in Somerville, NJ to attend the annual remembrance ceremony honoring the 39 local residents of Somerset County lost.

I then went to midtown Manhattan, visiting Bryant Park where the 25th anniversary was marked with a display of 2753 empty chairs facing south, to represent each life lost at the WTC. The public could walk through, leave a carnation and handwritten note of remembrance.

I spent the rest of the day at the WTC waterfall pools where many came to pay respects to the victims from this unthinkable moment in our history.

I was 14 years old when I took this, and came across it in old album recently. I wish I had more images from that trip as I don’t remember the context and hope to find the negatives.

But I won’t forget 9/11, the memories and mood from that day, and how tragically surreal it was then and still today. My respects and prayers to all lives lost and impacted.

Lines of Light

Nothing special, but special at the same time. Driving home at dusk recently, I couldn’t help but notice how the setting sun hit the power lines, turning them into long garlands of bright light! ☀️

A Camden color composition

Today was the opening of the Photo-Versus exhibition at the JPEG Gallery in Camden NJ!

With the theme of “Reflecting America”, the idea was to choose 25 photographers from each of NJ and PA, group and display their images without revealing the names or locations of the artists, and then have the public vote on their favorite images per set! The “winning” state will be announced next Saturday 9/12 at the exhibition!

The EJM Foundation presents Photo-Versus! — a new and unique photography competition and exhibit bringing together photographers from the neighboring states of New Jersey and Pennsylvania for a visual “showdown”!

In light of the 250th anniversary of declaring US Independence, the theme of this photo show “Reflecting America”. America means something different to everyone, and the 25 photographers selected from NJ and PA reflect their personal sentiments, perspectives, experiences, and interpretations about the nation through their lens. I’m honored to be one of the 25 NJ artists selected!

Having lived in NJ now for 25 years, I have taken many portraits while exploring the state. For this show I submitted images of NJ youth, and the one shown here was selected: on a windy day in New Brunswick, NJ in early May, the unpredictable, strong wind made the young woman’s hair a barrier for a split moment, yet her one visible eye directly connects our gaze to hers. She is hidden but looking right at us. She is vulnerable yet intensely focused and fully aware.

When reflecting on America, today’s young people have inherited various serious issues, yet they remain our hope, and our reminder to do right for our communities and ourselves, to be role models as caring citizens of the country and the world at large.
