The Douglas Fir is our state tree and by far the most common tree we have here in Oregon. You can identify it many ways, but an easy one is that its cones have “mouse tails.” A special note about this tree is you can eat some of the needles! During new growth you will notice a lighter green needle that is more pliable. Break off a little bit of these ends and have a taste or add it to tea; it's a great source of vitamin C and antioxidants! And before we eat anything we forage, be sure to make a positive identification of your plant. Comment below if you've tried Douglas Fir tips.

Did you know you know there is a museum of trees in our city? Hoyt Arboretum is a gem in the heart of Portland that houses a treasure trove of trees. Take your family out and enjoy this beautiful weather. Free street parking can be found, but consider in your planning that public restrooms are not available.

Trilliums are very special flowers that we can enjoy now that they are in bloom. Perhaps one of the most unique things about them is their growing pattern. It is such a fragile process, it is illegal in Oregon to pick them! Trilliums get their name from their unique structure of have only three leaves, three sepals, and three petals. Can you find the leaves, sepals and petals in this photo?

Hint: two of our sepals are hiding!

In honor of Earth Day, let us remember what God has created. Let us reflect on the truth that He has given us authority and we are to honor Him by being good stewards of His gift. We read in Pslam 24: "The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to him. For he laid the earth's foundation on the seas and built it on the ocean depths." As you go out and explore, take time to care for the nature that surrounds you. Collect any trash you see, and let's make an impact that reflects our stewardship. Post photos below of your family being good stewards!

During this time, it is all the more important to get outside and explore God's creation! Fresh air, sunshine, and forest therapy can lift our moods and strengthen our immune systems. Consider an outdoor activity that can be done in your yard, hiking a local trail, or visiting many of the accessible nature preserves throughout our city. Be careful to practice all social distancing recommendations and do not leave your home if you're sick. Share with us your experiences outdoors during this challenging time. We would love to hear new ideas, check out your photos and videos, and connect through the beautiful gift of nature!
