Many hitters are given the cues “don’t move your head” or “keep your head still.” While we don’t need excessive head movement, the head of just about every high level hitter moves. Hitters load, the head moves down/back. The hitter strides, the head moves forward and down. On lower pitches, the head moves down through the swing.

In order to get into the ground, get into good postures, create stretch and create a good bat path, the head needs to move. Hitters who keep their head still end up too upright, too light in the ground, with little to no stretch and an impaired downhill/flat bat path.

Many hitters think they need to have completely different swings for inside and outside pitches. While there are nuanced differences, the ability to cover both sides of the plate comes down to one major factor: posture, namely being hinged. When hitters get their hips back and chest over, it allows them to be closer to getting to the outside half, while clearing space for the arms and hands on the inner half.

While I never think a hitter should have the approach of pulling outside pitches, if a hitter crushes a line drive to their pull side, it shows that they maintained their posture throughout the entire hitting zone.

The fact is that even the best hitters in the world are going to be early on pitches that are down and away. In order to hit these, a hitter has to maintain their tilt over home plate to allow their bat to be on plane through the front part of the zone.
