April marks the start of Autism Awareness Month, a time to listen, understand, and support the voices of individuals and families living with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Here in East Brunswick, this message hits close to home. Our community has long been a leader in supporting neurodivergent individuals, from one of the state’s outstanding special education programs to being the original home of Popcorn for the People, a remarkable organization creating meaningful employment opportunities for adults on the autism spectrum.

Autism is part of the fabric of our community. It reminds us that neurodivergent individuals experience the world in unique and valuable ways. These are differences that deserve understanding, respect, and support.

But this can’t stop at the local level. In Washington, that means fighting for stronger funding for special education, expanding access to early intervention services, supporting job training and employment opportunities, and ensuring families have access to affordable, comprehensive care.

This month is about more than awareness. It’s about acceptance, inclusion, and action. It’s about ensuring every child has access to the resources they need, every family feels supported, and every individual has the opportunity to thrive.

Let’s continue building a community...and a country...where everyone belongs. 💙
