BREAKING: Giant Mosquitoes Invade Maverick County
EAGLE PASS, TX – In what experts are calling “a winged nightmare,” Maverick County residents are being urged to take immediate action as recent rains have triggered a mosquito uprising — and these aren’t your average, dainty insects.“They’re the size of crows,” claimed one local, nervously swatting at the air with a fly swatter the size of a canoe paddle. “I thought it was a bird at first. Then it buzzed and stole my taco.”
With puddles, planters, and empty buckets now doubling as luxury resorts for mosquito larvae, county officials are asking the public to help shut down these five-star breeding grounds before things get even more out of hand.
“Empty your water containers,” one official warned, “or prepare to be carried away by flying bloodsuckers.”The Maverick County Road & Bridge Department has already begun an aggressive mosquito control campaign. Crews are out in force, spraying, fogging, and whispering threatening messages into the foliage.“We’re doing everything short of summoning a plague of frogs,” said one county employee. “But we need your help.”Tips to defend your castle include:Dump standing water (unless you enjoy uninvited guests with wings and a bad attitude).Scrub birdbaths (because even the birds are scared to bathe now).Wear long sleeves (or full suits of armor, depending on your neighborhood).Report mosquito sightings — especially if they shadow the sun.
Officials also suggest avoiding late evening strolls unless you want to be part of a blood drive you didn’t sign up for.“We can fight them,” the spokesperson said. “But only if we stand united — and maybe invest in some extra-strength bug spray and a tennis racket.”Stay safe, stay dry, and remember, Maverick County may be strong, but these mosquitoes… they work out.

Where in the World is Gracie? The Great Giraffe Mystery of Real County
By Jose G. Landa
Just when you thought you'd heard it all in Texas, Real County has given us a mystery that sounds like it escaped from a children's book.
A giraffe is missing.
Not a Chihuahua.
Not a goat.
Not even somebody's pet longhorn.
A giraffe.
Her name is Gracie, and she was last seen west of Leakey in the Texas Hill Country. Her owner is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to her safe return.
Naturally, Texans have questions.
First of all, how does a giraffe disappear?
A giraffe is basically a walking cell tower with eyelashes.
Most people have trouble hiding Christmas decorations in their garage. Somebody is apparently hiding an animal that can look into a second-story bedroom window without standing on anything.
As news of Gracie's disappearance spread, amateur detectives immediately began developing theories.
Theory #1: She's Working Construction
Several residents reported seeing what appeared to be a giraffe neck sticking above a tree line.
Turns out it was just a cell phone tower.
Or was it?
Perhaps Gracie has found work helping TxDOT survey future highway projects. With a view from 18 feet in the air, she could probably identify potholes three counties away.
Theory #2: She's Vacationing in Eagle Pass
Given the summer heat, some suspect Gracie headed south looking for excitement.
Witnesses claim they saw a suspiciously tall silhouette standing near the international bridges and headed to the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino but that has yet to be confirmed.
Customs officials reportedly checked every vehicle except one moving tree that kept changing lanes.
Theory #3: She's Joined a Deer Herd
This theory falls apart almost immediately.
A giraffe trying to blend in with whitetail deer is like a skyscraper trying to hide in a parking lot.
Still, Gracie may be convinced nobody notices her.
Theory #4: She's Playing Hide-and-Seek
Many people underestimate giraffes.
Maybe Gracie watched one too many wildlife documentaries and believes if she stands perfectly still nobody can see her.
It's a strategy that works well for sticks, bushes, and fence posts.
Less so for a creature whose head is approximately eye level with a basketball goal.
Theory #5: She's Gone Undercover as a Windmill
Texas has thousands of windmills.
A very determined giraffe standing beside one with her neck stretched straight up might fool somebody driving by at 75 miles per hour.
At least for a second.
Theory #6: She Was Mistaken for Bigfoot
Think about it.
People spend decades searching for Bigfoot.
Nobody ever thinks to look for a giraffe.
Maybe Gracie has been quietly roaming the Hill Country all along while everyone was focused on sasquatches and chupacabras.
Theory #7: She's Running for Office
This may be the most Texas explanation of all.
Gracie realized she was already taller than most politicians and decided to launch a campaign.
Her platform?
"Keeping an eye on government from a higher perspective."
Poll numbers remain unavailable.
The Serious Part
While the jokes practically write themselves, Gracie's owner is genuinely trying to locate her beloved animal and is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to her safe return.
So if you're driving through the Texas Hill Country and happen to notice a head peeking over oak trees, don't assume it's an unusually ambitious deer.
It might just be Gracie.
After all, in Texas, apparently anything is possible.
Except hiding a giraffe.
Or so we thought. 🦒🤠

On June 19, 2026, a Maverick County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Deputy conducted a traffic stop on a white Kia Sorento traveling on Highway 57, just beyond the United States Border Patrol (USBP) checkpoint, for an obstructed vehicle registration sticker.
Upon making contact with the driver, the deputy observed signs of nervous and anxious behavior, including visible shaking while providing his driver’s license and proof of insurance.
The deputy subsequently requested the driver’s consent to proceed to Port of Entry (POE) #2 for a non-intrusive X-ray inspection of the vehicle, to which the driver agreed. Upon arrival, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers conducted the scan and identified an anomaly beneath the vehicle’s center console.
A subsequent inspection revealed 27 black bundles concealed within the vehicle. The bundles had a combined weight of approximately 30.52 kilograms (67.30 pounds). A field test of the substance yielded a positive result for co***ne.
The driver was arrested and charged with Manufacture or Delivery of a Controlled Substance, Penalty Group 1. He was transported to the Tom Bowles Detention Center for booking and further processing. A report was completed and filed regarding this incident.

Hope Rises with the Morning Sun
"In the morning, Lord, You hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before You and wait expectantly." — Psalm 5:3
Each morning is a gift—a new opportunity to begin again, regardless of yesterday's victories or struggles. Psalm 5:3 reminds us that before we face the demands of the day, before we carry the weight of our responsibilities, and before we allow worry to consume our thoughts, we can bring everything to God.
There is something powerful about starting the day with prayer. It is a declaration that we do not walk alone. It is an acknowledgment that our strength is limited, but God's strength is endless. When we place our hopes, fears, dreams, and burdens before Him, we are reminded that there is a greater purpose at work in our lives.
The final words of this verse are especially meaningful: "and wait expectantly." David did not pray and then surrender to despair. He prayed with confidence. He expected God to hear him. He expected God to move. He expected God to provide guidance, comfort, and strength.
Today, whatever challenge may be standing before you, begin your morning with faith. Speak to God honestly. Lay your requests before Him.
Then move forward with confidence, knowing that He hears every prayer and sees every struggle.
For those who are weary, may you find renewed strength. For those who are facing uncertainty, may you find peace. For those who are carrying heavy burdens, may you find comfort. And for those who are pursuing a dream, may you find the courage to keep moving forward.
The morning sun rises each day as a reminder that darkness never has the final word. God's mercies are new every morning, and His faithfulness remains constant through every season of life.
Today is a new day. Walk into it with faith, hope, and expectation. The same God who carried you through yesterday is already waiting in tomorrow. Trust Him, seek Him, and remember that no matter how difficult the road may seem, hope rises with the morning sun.
