This picture is courtesy of Interstate Batteries...Did you know vehicles that are operated in warmer climates will have batteries that have a shorter life expectancy than those that are in colder areas? Of course other factors will come into play as well. ie driving habits, charging system condition, aftermarket accessories, etc.

Have you had a Powertrain Analysis? Powertrain analysis helps detect gear or transmission
problems and lubricant contamination before they
can result in costly downtime or repairs. The analysis
is applicable to transmission, differential or final drive
(gear) components in all types of mobile equipment,
and includes testing to help you ensure long
equipment life and optimal performance.

The first picture is of a starter that is beginning to show signs of excessive wear/noise. The uniform peaks (cylinder compression humps) also enables us to check engine health quickly and accurately. Notice how the peaks to the right have roughly the same amplitude (height).

The second picture is of a starter that would fail intermittently. This problem was caught during a pre-purchase inspection. The dealer's used car technicians had already proclaimed the car as being front line ready.

This is a thermal image of a bad idler pulley bearing. A local dealership wanted to install a $600 alternator to fix the customer's complaint of an abnormal noise under the hood. The thermal imaging camera clearly showed that the idler pulley bearing was the actual problem. The cost of the pulley and installation was less than $100.

We diagnosed this car for a lady who bought three (faulty) alternators from the same parts store. The alternator was supplying adequate current, but the battery light kept coming on. Three different repair facilities said they could find no problem with the charging system. The problem was a faulty alternator pulley bearing.

Come to find out there was a whole batch of alternators (bad pulley bearings) that were supplied to the parts store by the re-manufacturer.
