Durham deserves better than Duke’s “HomeGrown initiative.”

Residents and small businesses are bearing the costs of paying for teachers, city workers, parks, and transit. Our community wants Duke to succeed, especially in these challenging times, but we cannot afford to subsidize the university to the extent that we have been for decades.

Now more than ever we need to work together! Duke should make payments in lieu of taxes to the city and county of $10 to $20 million dollars per year, far below what it would pay in property taxes if it weren’t tax-exempt.

Can Duke afford to pay Durham amid federal attacks on higher ed?

Duke Respects Durham stands in solidarity with researchers, graduate students, and *all* campus workers facing devastating funding cuts.

Other research universities across the state expect upwards of $1.2 billion in funding cuts. These are cuts to research grants, affecting the faculty, grad workers who apply for grants, and other contract workers on campus. They do *not* impact Duke’s $11.9 billion endowment, the core institution, and Duke administrators’ executive salaries.

Duke can afford to pay their fair share to Durham, even amid these cuts.

Born March 5, 1871, Rosa Luxemburg was a passionate advocate for social justice and workers’ rights, emphasizing the importance of democracy within revolutionary movements. Her contributions to Marxist theory continue to inspire leftist movements. Despite facing immense adversity, including imprisonment and eventually assassination, Luxemburg’s legacy rests in her commitment to equality and freedom.
