As cities like consider removing their urban freeways, let us:

1) never forget what we lost to "urban renewal", and
2) develop a better future for all

The photo here shows City's North Loop freeway (right), and the neighborhoods that it displaced (left).

Our friends at North Loop Neighbors have a vision of what this amazing space could become πŸ™οΈ

Should Durham, NC get rid of the Durham Freeway?

What does an Accessory Dwelling Unit actually look like?

On Saturday, June 6, CITYBUILDER, WakeUP Wake County, and RaleighForward are hosting Raleigh's first ADU Sustainability Tour.

ADUs, often called backyard cottages or garage apartments, have been legal citywide since 2020. Come see some some of the first to be built!

Join us for a morning workshop and an afternoon tour of completed ADUs across Raleigh. Meet homeowners, designers, and builders. Learn what worked, what was challenging, and what lessons can help future projects succeed.

This abandoned network of alleyways in Middleborough, UK was transformed into a pedestrian street for neighbors and their kids to connect and play.

But it wasn't the city that did this. Mavis Arnold, 75, led the charge to turn these derelict alleyways into gathering spaces piece-by-piece. The first photo is only a few blocks from the second... but separated by 8 years of hard, community-initiated work πŸ”¨

Where are the best alleys in ? Any candidates for transformation?

Executive Order 36 has three sections:
Section 1: Establishes a new Senior Advisor for Housing in the Office of the Governor
Section 2: Efficient Deployment of State Resources Through Technology and Data
Section 3: Further Integrate Housing Initiatives at Department of Commerce.

Our new article break it down for you.

We believe in supporting all the little things! Housing doesn't have to look like big 5-over-1 apartment blocks. That's why we advocate for single-stair buildings, townhomes, duplexes, triplexes, and apartment buildings of all shapes and sizes.

Thanks to Jon Jon the Happy Urbanist for this great sketch!
