💙 The Power of Giving
More than twenty years ago, Paula and Frank Sloan established the Richard M. Sloan Memorial Scholarship Endowment at Durham Tech in memory of their son, Richard, pictured here.
Created to honor Richard’s life and support students facing pivotal moments in their own journeys, the scholarship has helped Durham Tech students connected with TROSA pursue education, workforce training, and new opportunities. Today, it prioritizes students studying Welding, Electrical Systems, Automotive Systems, and Culinary Arts—career pathways that lead to meaningful, family-sustaining work.
Because the scholarship is endowed, Richard’s legacy will continue to support Durham Tech students for generations to come.
We are deeply grateful to the Sloan family for transforming personal loss into lasting opportunity and hope for others. ❤️

🌟Board Member Spotlight: Bill Stokes🌟
After retiring from a career in financial services with Morgan Stanley, Bill Stokes found a meaningful way to continue giving back through service on the Durham Tech Foundation Board. Encouraged by fellow board members and longtime community leaders Walter Newton, Kay Gresham, and his wife, Lucy Stokes, Bill joined the Board with a desire to support Durham Tech’s mission and students. He has especially enjoyed serving on the Foundation’s Finance Committee, where he has helped guide investment policy development and strengthen the Foundation’s stewardship practices.
For Bill, one of the most powerful reminders of Durham Tech’s impact came during this year’s Scholarship Breakfast:
“It has been deeply fulfilling to be involved with an organization like Durham Tech and its Foundation and to witness firsthand the impact Durham Tech has on our community. Our recent scholarship breakfast especially underscored the tremendous opportunities the college provides and the profound difference it makes in the lives of so many students in Durham.”
Thank you, Bill, for your leadership, expertise, and commitment to Durham Tech students. 💚

At Durham Tech, student success means supporting the whole student. Through the Emergency Financial Assistance Program (EFAP) and Wellness & Basic Needs (WBN) program, students facing unexpected hardships can access help with essentials like housing, utilities, transportation, food, childcare, and other urgent needs that might otherwise force them to pause their education. These programs are often the difference between a student dropping out and staying on track to complete a credential that can change the trajectory of their life and family.
As we celebrate this year’s graduates, we’re reminded that behind every cap and gown is a community of support helping students persist to the finish line. Thank you to the donors and partners who help make this support possible for our students every day. 💚
