"This ultrasound had been donated to the hospital in January 2023. It was starting to rust, and the main issue was that due to poor design the side door had fallen, disconnecting some main power supply cables. We reconnected them, secured the side door, and ran some tests. [The last third picuture is] from the testing we did on a woman pregnant with twins!" π€°π»
Although modern medical equipment is extremely complex, basic challenges continue to prevent proper operation in low-resource hospitals. Issues such as damaged cords, clogged filters, or even blown fuses can result in equipment being stored away or discarded.
Participants on our 2023 Summer Institute in repaired 182 pieces of medical equipment, including this ultrasound machine that had been donated 6 months prior and had previously been unusable.

This weekend, 11 students from UNSW Sydney will land in Nepal for a Winter Institute, where they will spend 9 weeks on the ground working to continue our support of the Nepali healthcare system by returning more medical equipment to service.
EWH was founded in 2001 on the belief that university students can meaningfully contribute to low-resource healthcare systems across the globe. Student volunteers on the programs that we facilitate provide much-needed support to hospitals, directly contributing to improved healthcare delivery for communities in need.

Our message this year is simple: Saving equipment is saving lives. Hospitals around the world don't have the resources they need to keep critical medical equipment in service, and as a result, the quality of care that they can provide is diminished. EWH volunteers provide much-needed support to hospitals, directly contributing to improved healthcare delivery for communities in need.

"The most valuable part [of the Summer Institute program] for me was the relationship that we built both with the hospital and the host family, but also very much the other students. I have never had an experience like this and I will now have forever friends from all over the world. I thought the experience in the hospital and the work we were doing would be the biggest thing, but I now think the people we spent time with made everything even better." - Elisa, 2023 Summer Institute volunteer from Denmark
Over 5,000 miles away from home in Guatemala, Elisa not only made a difference for a community in need, but found forever friends along the way πβοΈπ
