Weβre excited to announce that weβre starting an Open Space Steward program! Weβre looking for volunteers who can help us monitor and protect the New Hope Creek Bottomlands Trail and the Bottomlands ecosystem. Open Space Stewards will walk the trail on a regular basis and have the opportunity to assist with a variety of projects, including ecological research, trail maintenance, and outreach. This is an excellent way to help care for Durham County's public lands and learn about conservation and land management.

Durham County Government joined Solarize the Triangle's '23 campaign for its second successful year and today we're excited to share our MILESTONES! πππ
π― Durham County achieved:
π 84 out of the 143 total signed solar contracts
π Over $131K in annual utility bill savings
π 42% of the whole Program's clean energy deployment
π 2.5M pounds of avoided carbon dioxide in the atmosphere
(equivalent to 18,750 tree seedlings grown for 10 years
or 252 gas-powered vehicles off the road for a year)!!!

Durham County, in partnership with Orange County and Granville County, has been selected as 1 of 12 local governments nationwide to receive $1.5 million in funding from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) Competitive Program, a funding opportunity from the Office of State and Community Energy Programs at the U.S. Department of Energy.
The three counties are joining forces with several partners to launch the NC Energy Burden & Emissions Reduction Program (EBERP). The programβs priorities are to reduce local energy burden and greenhouse gas emissions in Justice40 communities across the three counties. EBERP plans to conduct neighborhood-focused residential energy upgrades to make homes more energy-efficient. Plus, offer neighborhood education and workforce training to create new opportunities and skills.

This is a great opportunity to see a special place in Durham.
The Durham County Open Space Program is proud to host an exciting event at the New Hope Creek Bottomlands this weekend as part of Great Trails State Day and the Year of the Trail. Researchers from the North Carolina Biodiversity Project will lead a guided hike at the Bottomlands Trail to discuss their recent biological inventory of the New Hope Creek Corridor. Supported by the Open Space Program and funded through a grant from Burtβs Bees, this study is among the most comprehensive biological inventories of this sort ever conducted in North Carolina and is an invaluable contribution to conservation efforts along New Hope Creek.
