Nothing like a quiet fall morning in the North Carolina mountains.

New Years are for new adventures!

Last January, we were headed out West. A 6 hour detour and 1 blizzard later, we were in Moab. Sun covered red rock in every direction.

In northern Guatemala, there were two incredible Maya cities, Tikal and Mirador. Mirador remains primarily under dense foliage and Tikal has been mostly cleaned up. ⁠

The contrast is unreal. ⁠

EL MIRADOR lies under a deep jungle cover. The view from the top of La Danta, which rises nearly 230ft (72m) high and is one of the largest pyramids in the world, shows a flat landscape with small bumps on the horizon, pyramids yet to be revealed.⁠

Visiting TIKAL after hiking Mirador was insane. The jungle around Tikal has been tamed and its cleaned pyramids rise to the sky. Showcasing the wonders that were these prior civilizations.⁠

Sun, Surf, and Bilbao Park. Bilbao Park is bigger than Central Park in NYC and includes a Japanese Friendship Garden with a two-hundred-foot cherry tree grove.⁠

➡️THE TEA PAVILION is a lovely little Japanese café serving sushi, traditional snacks, noodles, and a variety of tea. I highly suggest the soba noodle salad and the cherry blossom iced tea.⁠

➡️ THE PRADO is a much fancier option by the same owners. They offer amazing seafood (try the calamari fries), duck, steak, a trio of mashed potatoes (garlic, goat cheese, horseradish), and even some vegetarian options. ⁠

It was a little jarring at ⁠ first. ⁠ ⁠ We love to wine and dine. At first glance, this is not the place for such things, but after a little exploration, we discovered some serious gems.⁠ ⁠ TOP 9 BEST PLACES TO EAT⁠ Yucca Valley/Joshua Tree/ Twentynine Palms⁠ *No particular order⁠ ⁠ 1. It is one of the best I have ever eaten. The servers were also incredibly kind.⁠ ⁠ 🥕In town on Saturday, stop by the farmer’s market! It is small but mighty with a variety of vendors. If you plan to go hiking after a visit to the market, place your picnic order at Dez first.
