Inspiring, connecting, strengthening communities.

Since 1999, SpiritHouse Inc, a Durham, North Carolina based cultural arts and organizing organization, has worked with low-wealth families and community members to uncover and uproot the systemic barriers that prevent us from gaining the resources, leverage and capacity for long-term self-sufficiency. We pursue our mission and vision purposefully and with compassion developing programs that:

Joy is not a luxury. It's resistance. ✨

Joy is a sanctuary where our community gets to celebrate, laugh, dance, and breathe without justification. It's the ancient practices our ancestors passed down and the remixed versions we're creating today. It's the potlucks, the cookouts, the cypher, the Sunday dinners that keep us whole.

Revolutionary's Mixtape centers on joy because joy is how we survive. Joy is how we heal. Joy is how we remind ourselves what we're fighting for.

Come experience it with us. Join the Fam.

I am the woman
with the blessed
dark skin
I am the woman
with teeth repaired
I am the woman
with the healing eye
the ear that hears.

I am the woman: Dark,
repaired, healed
Listening to you.

I would give
to the human race
only hope.

(The) Revolutionary's Mixtape isn't just a theme. It's a three-part strategy. 🎵

Transformative Justice: We're sculpting new accountability practices that transform oppressive systems from the inside out. We don't wait for the system to save us.

Joy & Cultural Practices: Joy is resistance. We create sanctuaries where our community can celebrate, explore ancestral technologies, and remix them for today.

Civic Engagement: They tried to erase our history. We're fighting back by arming our community with real civic knowledge and power.

This is (The) Revolutionary's Mixtape.

Our grandmothers passed down wisdom at kitchen tables. Our elders taught us through stories, not textbooks. We learned organizing through call-and-response, not PowerPoints. That's Black Southern culture. That's how revolutions are born.

At SpiritHouse South, we honor that tradition. Every program we run roots back to the kitchen table conversations that change the world.

The tenacity and brilliance of Durham's way makers laid the groundwork for building banks, insurance companies, theaters, and businesses that thrived in our community when the rest of the country said they couldn't.

They understood what we still know today: local economic power is survival, and community wealth should be mutual.

New to Durham? Let us tell you about the culture that built this city. 🏙️

This isn't just a place. It's a legacy. Black brilliance made Durham what it is today.
We're still here. Still building. Still creating. And we want you to know the real story, not the gentrified version.

Welcome home, fam.

Know your history. 🏛️

The Hayti District was once a thriving community, home to churches, art, businesses, and schools. All built by us, for us.

Before urban renewal tore it down, Hayti was proof that Black economic power wasn't a dream. It was real.

Before we could write it down, we spoke it. Our words have been tools for survival, resistance, and liberation.

This is Jaki Shelton Green, North Carolina's Poet Laureate, Durham's own, reminding us that no matter what they tried to take, they could not steal our light.
