The best shrubs in a North Carolina yard aren't the ones stacked at the big-box garden center. Serious gardeners drive clear across the state to track these seven down, and once you know what they do for the goldfinches and butterflies, you understand why the hunt is worth it.

That empty spot in the yard you keep meaning to fill sits there another summer, mostly because the box-store stock never took to your red clay. A handful of North Carolina nurseries stock plants already suited to our clay and sandy coastal soil, each one worth a weekend drive of its own. Load the car once and plant something that actually belongs here.

Most North Carolina homeowners plant a shade tree for the shade and never think past it. But one native oak, matched to the right spot in your yard, does something the flashy nursery trees can't touch: it feeds the caterpillars your songbirds' chicks depend on and keeps paying off for generations. The catch is which oak belongs where you're standing.
