-The WHY behind the WHY-

Just got back from Zambia where completed five (5) water systems bringing life, safety, and health to southern Zambia.

In these pics, you see the WHY! Children who won’t die from cholera. A 93 year old man turning a spigot for the first time in his life LIFE!

But the WHY behind that WHY is even more important! Why are these projects unlike any other? These projects will last for decades because the villagers invested their time, labor, and money to build it themselves.

We didn’t do a water project; we created five water utilities. The villagers will run these utilities collecting user fees that will be saved for future repair costs. Plus, because they built it themselves, they know how to repair it. This is what REAL looks like. It is community-led, community-built, community-owned, community-sustained. More importantly, this project design allows local people to discover their own sense of agency! They did it! They get to be the hero of their own story!

None of this would be possible without our amazing partners like and These two groups are true humanitarian heroes! We love VAP and HNRC!

This woman is a titan of international development and a personal hero of mine! She blends empathy with a deep understanding of the difficulties and pitfalls that we face as practitioners of community-led, sustainable development.

If you want to learn about REAL solutions to extreme poverty, pull up a chair and learn from a seasoned vet, Janet Nyoni.

Very worrisome when moderate and conservative voices are thinking along these lines...

An incredible experience. Such community with all the runners but especially our foursome. There were no political allegiances or partisan posturing on the course, just ppl helping ppl attempt the impossible. Everyone encouraged every other runner as they passed. It was beautiful….and excruciating. A lot of falls, scratches, and blood later, and we crossed the finish line! JOY🔥🙌🏼🙏❤️✅

Im so excited that the RISE podcast is taking off! If you’d like to learn about PROVEN strategies to solve gloval poverty, check us out wherever you get your pods. (just search “rise poverty”) My co-host Jaipreet Kaur (a leader with the “All We Can” NGO based in London) is truly brilliant, and you’ll enjoy getting to know her.

On RISE, you’ll actually hear from project officers (we call them POs) who are doing the work in remote villages around the world! You’ll also learn about techniques for decolonizing the development space and returning power to local people. Check us out! Three years in and it just gets better and better.
