The U.S. trucking industry has entered a new cost environment as truckload breakeven rates on new equipment climbed to $𝟑.𝟏𝟐 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐐𝟐 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, the highest level ever recorded and the first time the benchmark has exceeded the $3 threshold. According to JBF Consulting, the figure is 𝟑𝟔 𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐫 (+𝟏𝟑%) than in August 2025.

A sharp rise in diesel prices has been the primary driver, adding roughly 30 cents per mile to operating costs. Fuel now accounts for approximately 80 cents per mile, significantly increasing transportation expenses across the industry. For long-haul freight, this translates to an estimated $𝟖𝟓𝟐 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 per coast-to-coast load compared with last year.

A major cargo theft operation has been uncovered in the Northeastern United States, where eight suspects allegedly stole nearly $𝟒.𝟓 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 in a highly coordinated scheme targeting the logistics and trucking supply chain.

According to prosecutors, the group impersonated legitimate trucking carriers by 𝐡𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬, 𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐬 to gain access to high-value loads. Once approved, they reportedly arrived at warehouses in states including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, where they picked up cargo under false identities and diverted it to black-market channels in New York City.

The stolen shipments included 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐮𝐦 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐬, 𝐜𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐬, 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐟, 𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐛, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐢𝐫𝐞, with ci******es alone accounting for over $3.3 million of the total losses.

The trucking industry just saw one of its biggest legal shifts in years.

On May 14, 2026, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously ruled that freight brokers can be sued under state negligence laws for hiring unsafe trucking companies. The decision came in Montgomery v. Caribe Transport II after a 2017 crash that left Shawn Montgomery with a lost leg.

For over 30 years, brokers relied on federal preemption under the FAAAA to avoid these types of lawsuits. That protection is now gone.
