WILD DEHONG PURPLE DIAN HONG - Evening Sky. This was a sample from our friend Sarah 🫖 Thank you again for sharing. It was a very flavorful red tea with notes of butterscotch and plum. This tea comes from the Mangshi Township, Dehong prefecture of Yunnan, a province in Southwest China, and as we have discussed, the birthplace of all tea. Dehong is one of eight autonomous prefectures in Yunnan, bordering Myanmar to the West. The Dai and Jingpo tribes abound throughout the area. Evening Sky is made from the “wild purple” varietal, also known as Camellia Assamica var. dehongensis. Its potency and incredible Qi arise from its unadulterated nature.

Today I enjoyed this delicious ancient tree Sheng Pu’er in my little tea room. This is some more of the tea that my friend Jimmy McWhinney sent me from Renewal Tea in China. The music is from a friend of ours named Doug Burr. Me, Jimmy, and Doug all used to be roommates in Denton, Texas back in 1993. This little 6g Pu’er tea cake was absolutely amazing. There were notes of black Cherry and dark chocolate. I could taste the pungent minerals from the soil. It was smooth and buttery. Very enjoyable Sheng Pu’er! Good tea lifts my spirits and makes my soul smile. 🫖🙌🏼

A very good friend of mine Jimmy McWhinney lives in Shanghai, China and sent me these amazing teas from his friends farm called Renewal Teas. He explained that the “Renewal teas” are from his friend’s farm where their Renewal trainees can be directly involved in the harvesting and processing of the tea, supervised by a local family of tea farmers with generations of experience. They have full confidence and supervision of the method of farming, processing and packaging the teas. The preparation is traditional with no additives. All except the white tea are panned in a wood-burning wok so that may come through in the flavor.
Last night we celebrated our tradition of having a tea ceremony the night before our daughter’s birthday. She is four years old today. My parents were here in town and enjoyed all of the delicious teas with us. We started with the Ancient tree black tea – large, unshaped leaves. This tea tasted mature with resiny/oily notes of rich honey. It was velvety smooth and pungent. We then had the Fragrant honey oolong - loose-leaf tea. This Oolong had a very rich taste. It almost seemed carbon baked. Very good long lasting flavor and held many steeps. Next was the Shu (raw) pu’er – packaged as large dark green pebbles. This Pu’er almost had a cheese/feet like quality about it. It was very unique and dank. At first the smell was a bit off putting, but I quickly grew to love it. The final tea of the night was the Ancient tree sheng (ripe) pu’er – packaged as dragon pearls in peach wrapper. This was buttery and rich like apricot custard. Also notes of manuka honey. Remarkable tea and was a great way to end the night!
Thank you so much Jimmy for sharing your local tea with me. We truly appreciate it! Jeana Marino Photography + Fine Art

Authentic Masala Chai - My BEST batch yet! This is a take on the traditional spiced tea from India. I like it SPICY. I used Assam black tea, fresh ginger, cardamom, cinnamon sticks, cloves, black pepper, fennel, nutmeg, star anise, whole milk, and jaggery to sweeten the deal.
The taste is rich, sweet, and spicy from the black pepper and fresh ginger. VERY tasty! 🙌🏼 The main benefit of chai I notice is how it opens my senses and wakes my brain up! Whenever I’m tired, a cup of tea always lifts my spirits.

Enjoying this delicious Jade Tie Guan Yin from . What better way to beat the heat than sipping some nice hot Oolong whilst watching UFC Fight Night?? This tea is one of the most famous Oolong teas in China, Tiě Guān Yīn hails from the mountains of Anxi in Fujian. The flavor was like drinking from a fresh floral spring in the dense amazon jungle. Very crisp, bright and slightly sweet. Smooth and balanced. It’s a truly remarkable Oolong and one of my favorites. Thanks for the suggestion !
This tea is one of the most well-known and celebrated Chinese teas, and as such suffers from overproduction as tea companies try to capitalize on its renown. Grown from a robust cultivar of the same name known for its broad, deeply-serrated leaves, this tea was traditionally heavily oxidized and roasted with charcoal. More recently, the low-oxidation Qīng Xiāng 清香 ("Clear Fragrance") version of this rolled oolong has eclipsed the traditional style in popularity. This is not only due to its remarkably abundant floral fragrance when lightly oxidized, but also the fact that the low-oxidation process lends itself well to machine-processing. During West China Tea Company's first four years in business, we had a conspicuous gap in our inventory for not having this tea in stock. Try as we might, we had never located a version of this tea that we were happy with. After 5 determined days of searching through the tea markets of Anxi, we had tried dozens of Tiě Guān Yīn but nothing remotely drinkable. Discouraged and literally ill from trying so many chemical-laden teas, we went to the tiny hot spring town of Longmen, just south of Anxi county, to convalesce. Lo and behold, in a tiny hotel we were served the best low-oxidation Tiě Guān Yīn we had ever tried.
