CHOICE Humanitarian mourns the passing of our co-founder, Dr. Timothy “Tim” Evans, who passed away on May 21, 2026, at the age of 76.
Tim’s compassion, vision, and lifelong commitment to service helped shape the foundation of our organization and continue to guide our mission today.
After serving as a young missionary in Peru, Tim developed a deep love for the people of Latin America and a belief that communities must lead their own development. In 1982, moved by the story of a young girl who died from contaminated water, he founded the Andean Children’s Foundation. That work later grew into CHOICE Humanitarian alongside Professor James Mayfield.
Tim believed international development was not about doing things for people, but working alongside them so communities could become self-reliant.
Though his work in clean water, education, and health impacted countless lives, Tim never sought recognition. He simply believed it was his duty to help others.
One of his favorite quotes beautifully reflected the way he lived his life:
“I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was duty. I acted and behold, duty was joy.”
— Rabindranath Tagore
Beyond his global impact, Tim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, mentor, and friend who loved bringing people together in service and community.
We are profoundly grateful for Tim’s decades of leadership, compassion, and example. His legacy lives on through the communities, staff, partners, and friends he inspired around the world.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Melissa Evans and the entire Evans family.

In a few weeks, CHOICE Humanitarian will be represented at the Skoll World Forum in Oxford by CEO Heather Hammond Cruz and Kenya Country Director Oreu Lugogo.
The Forum (from The Skoll Foundation) convenes some of the world’s leading voices in social innovation, philanthropy, and community-driven change. We are honored to bring CHOICE’s perspective to those conversations—particularly what we have seen when rural communities are supported to define priorities, build local capacity, and connect to the resources they need to pursue sustained well-being.
We look forward to learning, sharing, and building relationships with others committed to community-led solutions.
Will you be there? We would love to connect.
