‘Generations of amazing guests’: Ballard’s Iceberg Drive In in Draper closing after 65 years A staple of the Draper community is saying goodbye after 65 years. To say goodbye, the restaurant is hosting a farewell with live music, memorable foods and signature drinks.

After 65 years, Ballard’s Iceberg at 673 E 12300 S in Draper is closing; its last day will be Saturday Oct 4 2025. The restaurant began in 1960 when Alice Mae and Allen Ballard bulldozed the front yard of their house and built the Iceberg Drive-in, for about $4,000 ($44K today). The Ballard house can still be seen behind the restaurant. It was mostly Alice Mae who cooked and ran the place but now her son, Don Ballard, is the owner. At about 75 years old he is ready to retire. A proposal to demolish the restaurant and house and build a Jiffy L**e has made its way through the Draper City Planning Commission. The Ballard family is bittersweet about the closing of the restaurant but in the last planning commission meeting they stated that this transition is beneficial for all involved. In a 2020 interview with the Draper Journal, Don Ballard said his greatest pride has been keeping the family business going for so long. He has kept large photos of his mother, Alice Mae, on the front windows as a tribute.
