Another one bites the ash! (E.A.B. That is or the Emerald Ash Borer). If you have ash trees and you are not familiar with that term, you will be. This Asian beetle (said to be brought to North America via shipping crates from Asia to Chicago, and then spreading from there) is devastating our areas ash trees. Working in Warrington today where the EAB has really started to let its presence show. By the time you see a decline in your tree, the beetle larvae are gone and the damage is done. The beetle lays its larvae in the trees cadmium layer (just underneath the bark), where they hatch and eat their way through. You can see in the pictures below the swirl marks in the wood, and that is from our beetle larvae. The cadmium layer is how the tree transports water and nutrients from the ground, through the roots and up to the branches. With that layer now disturbed, the tree can no longer effectively "drink and eat" and slowly starves. You will notice little patches of lighter bark and less leaves on the tree, and at that point it's a pretty fast decline. There is no cure, there are some treatments that can prolong the life of the tree, but it will eventually succumb.
