What are compulsions?

From the IOCDF: “Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or thoughts that a person uses to neutralize or counteract the obsession — essentially to try and make their obsessions go away. People with OCD realize this is only a temporary solution, but without a better way to cope, they rely on compulsions nonetheless. Compulsions can also include avoiding situations that trigger obsessions. They are time-consuming and get in the way of important activities the person values.

In most cases, individuals with OCD feel driven to engage in compulsive behavior and would rather not have to do these time-consuming and often torturous acts.

Rather than being a source of pleasure, people with OCD perform compulsions because they believe they are necessary to prevent negative consequences and/or to escape or reduce anxiety or the presence of obsessions.”

Wilmington, DE OCD Walk The OCD Walk is the largest grassroots fundraising event benefiting the International OCD Foundation (IOCDF) that allows individuals impacted by obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) to connect, share stories, create impact, and show those struggling on their road to recovery that they are not alone!

Our second annual One Million Steps for OCD Walk is scheduled for Saturday, September 19th!

Yesterday we had the opportunity to share about OCD in our community. We joined area mental health organizations, hospitals, and practices who all serve a similar common goal toward bettering mental health resources and support in Delaware.

Our first OCD walk meeting is currently being planned for March! With interest or to join, email [email protected].

What are obsessions?

Obsessions in OCD are “unwanted thoughts, images, or urges that may be extreme or disturbing.” The obsessions are often accompanied by uncomfortable feelings such as fear, disgust, doubt, or a feeling that things have to be ”just right.”

These obsessions occur over and over again and feel out of the person’s control.

The Online OCD Camp, sponsored by McLean OCD Institute, is a virtual weekend for youth ages 6–17 who have OCD or have a sibling with OCD.

The camp will take place January 31–February 1, 2026, and offers interactive sessions, educational activities, and supportive community building. Separate tracks are available for elementary, middle, and high schoolers, plus dedicated programming for parents and caregivers.

2025 was our first year as an organization, and it was an honor to see how much movement just one year could make.

Our first OCD walk, held at New Castle Battery Park, had over 100 registered attendees and raised a total of $5,800 to benefit both the IOCDF and OCD Delaware. We also presented our first Youth and Impact Awards to two deserving individuals.

During OCD Awareness Week, Legislative Hall in Dover was lit teal, and Governor Matt Meyer recognized the week for the first year in Delaware. We also received media coverage from Coastal Point newspaper and Delaware Online.

Our takeaway from this year is one of gratitude.

That hope can exist alongside even our greatest difficulties and that there is so much light in guiding this work toward greater understanding of OCD together 💙
