QUESTION: Why do I do samples?
There are three reasons: to show clients and potential clients possibilities they may not have seen from me before; to explore the various software programs I have, learning deeper their capabilities; and also to have fun! I enjoy what I do!
This group of question mark images started with the question, “What do you look for in an illustrator?” So I decided to place a question mark overtly in a variety of images. To learn more about the process of creating these 4 3D images, please visit my blog: https://lnkd.in/Gg3Bh3. QUESTION: When selecting an illustrator is style or range of capabilities what you look for?
This depends on what style you want. A lot of illustrators have a unique style and one may be exactly what you want for a particular project. But most concepts don’t require a distinct style. In that case, what you look for is someone who has the variety of skills needed to produce exactly what you want or who can suggest the best way to create your desired image.
That’s why I illustrated this 3D graffiti alley sample. Most people think of me for only 3D illustration or for my retouching capabilities. This image actually involves the use of 5 different software programs: Adobe Illustrator, for designing and executing the graffiti, Photoshop for combining the graffiti with a stock brick wall, and 3 different 3D programs—Vue, Hexagon, and Daz Studio. The latter was used for posing and rendering.

QUESTION: Is 3D illustration an approach to consider when you have a humorous concept you want executed?
Frequently, clients think of a humorous image as needing to be a stylized “cartoonish” drawing, but everyone is very familiar with 3D realistic style animated movies, so 3D illustration is a viable approach.

QUESTION: Is creating a 3D landscape a viable alternative when you can’t find the right stock image and can’t afford a location shoot, or it’s the wrong season for what you have in mind?
Vue software allows the creation of photo-realistic landscapes. In the hands of experienced illustrators every aspect of the image can be created to your specifications, sun placement, air quality, amount of haze and fog, type of clouds, rain, type of water, color and type of plants, rocks and mountains, camera angle, depth of field, type of lens, and on and on. Literally every square inch of the scene can be controlled.

QUESTION: Should you consider 3D illustration as an alternative for photography?
It depends on the subject matter. If you want to have a photo-realistic image of something that doesn’t exist in reality, 3D is definitely the solution. But when the subject does exist in reality, the decision for 3D illustration often depends on if there is or isn’t a budget for original photography or if you can or can’t find a stock photo that meets your needs.
This image is of a 3D character and the goal was to make it as believably photographic as possible. It requires selecting a model that is very realistic, but the thing that makes this look “real” is the ability to pose an emotional and relatable expression, and an in-depth understanding of lighting. The question mark is projected on the face by making a small “keyhole” shaped like the question mark centered on a plane and placing it close to the spotlight shining directly at the face.

QUESTION: What do you look for when you want to find an illustrator?
That’s the question that sparked a series of sample illustrations I’m going to start posting on LinkedIn. And since it’s about that question, I decided to do a group of illustrations where a question mark is overtly a part of the scene. So keep watching for postings of an illustration with a question mark in it. Hopefully, they will inspire you to conclude that I’m the answer to the question!
