This is exactly what I say all the time! If a voice teacher tells you this it is because she/he is ethical and understands vocal pedagogy.
If you do choose to teach children, which is becoming more common, stick to children's music.
About those child opera singers: here's the deal I'm going to let all you music-lovers in on a little secret: we professional musicians don't have much use for the phenomenon of the Child ...

Ready for another day of judging at the Dothan Cultural Arts Center Fall Choral and Theatre Festival. I heard some very talented Thespians from Dothan High School, Houston Academy, Radium Springs Magnet, and Early County High School yesterday. Break a leg Jefferson Davis, Ridgecrest Christian, and Robert E. Lee high schools!
