It makes me happy to see a happy ending since we hear awful stories so often. The police officers in this video used a sensory kit to deescalate and help calm this autistic boy who was experiencing a meltdown. 🥹

100% It is so incredibly important to teach self-advocacy! Every ABA program should include these skills. Whether a learner is verbal or nonverbal, they should not be excluded from learning to communicate their needs.
As a parent, I understand that feeling of wanting to connect with your child and be the reason why they are laughing and giggling. Autistic and other neurodiverse children often have unique, fixated interests that parents may have trouble connecting to or feel like they are competing with when they are trying to play with them. If you are the parent or sibling of an autistic loved one, here are some tips you can try to help you make that social connection with your child through play!

"You Belong Here"
100%!!! Not only does this apply to peer interactions, it also applies to siblings!! If you’re having trouble with your autistic child actively avoiding siblings, follow these techniques to help foster those play skills. Additionally, help those siblings learn to observe and understand which behaviors and facial expressions are indicating interest or avoidance so they know if what they’re doing is working.
❤️ What a sweet way to show understanding and support for each other’s needs.
