Proper Lane Change Techniques

Always change lanes using the SMOG rule (Signal, Mirrors, Over the Shoulder, Go).

Signal your intentions first to Make Sure They See You.
Lean and look into your Mirrors. Make sure there is enough space to perform, the lane change.
An Over the Shoulder look after checking the mirrors is necessary to reinforce that a vehicle or hazard is not in your blind spot and a safe lane change is possible.
Finally, after signaling your intentions and verifying a safe lane change is possible, cautiously Go.
Size Up the Whole Scene by checking one or more of your mirrors every 5 – 8 seconds to stay up to date on what is to the sides and the rear of your vehicle and to spot vehicles before they slip into your blind spots
