Bright Key Heard

Several years ago,, the Wiregrass Foundation and Dothan City Schools began researching a concept known as “Community Schools” as a way to engage the community more within the public school system. 🌟Proud Coordinator Moment🌟
When the Farm to School Program was selected by Heard families and staff as one of the initial Bright Key programs to be put in place, the goal was to expose students to agriculture in order to promote and encourage agricultural awareness, responsibility, collaboration and a sense of ownership.
Today was one of those moments when the program goal was met and came full circle.💫
In January, the Heard Bright Key 4-H club members planted seed potatoes in grow bag planters. After a few months of adding a little soil and a lot of patience, our students were able to gather their harvest yesterday.

Today, thanks to our amazing lunchroom staff at Heard, the full circle moment came when the students enjoyed eating the potatoes they grew. 🫶🏽

Yesterday, the Heard Bright Key Farm to School 4-H Clubs (4th-6th grades) planted the vegetable plants that they started as seeds two months ago. 🥒 🍅 🫛 🌶️ 🫑 🥬
They also harvested the potatoes 🥔 they planted back in January.
What a great way to spend Earth Day! 🌎

It's National Public Schools Volunteer Week! We couldn't do this work without the hundreds of community volunteers that serve in Bright Key(R) programs in Dothan City Schools. THANK YOU!
🎙️Attention Bright key stakeholders!
Our Farm to School🪴 program has a new garden shed that needs to be assembled! 🪛We are in need of two parent or community volunteers to put it together. It will require a drill and a little bit of time. ⏳
Please reply to this post, message, or email Ms. Wagner ([email protected]) if you can assist.

Yesterday was productive in the Farm to School program! The 4th, 5th, and 6th grade 4-H Clubs took the first steps in preparing our spring fruit and vegetable garden. Houston County Alabama 4-H coordinator, Mrs. Galloway, taught club members about the U.S. plant hardiness zones, and thus, why the seeds they sowed will start off in the greenhouse instead of the ground. Each grade also cleaned out their designated garden beds in preparation for fresh soil/compost to plant the seedlings in next month.
