Today’s post is all about clearing up some common myths we hear in surgery consults. A surgical consult is about education and choice—we review all options (surgical and non‑surgical), carefully assess each pet’s age and overall health rather than the number on the chart, and talk honestly about the long‑term risks of relying on pain meds alone. Our goal is to partner with you to find the safest, most effective plan so your pet can stay comfortable for as long as possible.

🔹Dr. Mehler is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. He earned his veterinary degree from Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and went on to complete both a one-year internship and a three-year surgical residency at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. He later joined the faculty at Michigan State University as an Assistant Professor of Surgery and Interventional Radiology, and has also taught at UC Davis and UPenn as adjunct faculty.

🔹Over the years, Dr. Mehler has helped shape the future of veterinary medicine— contributing to the development of new surgical devices, wound healing products, and nutritional therapies for dogs and cats. He’s also an international lecturer, researcher, and published author who’s traveled the globe teaching other veterinarians advanced surgical techniques.
