He came to us as Dudley. He went home as Bumper.

Last week, 157 animals found homes through Michigan Humane. Every adoption has a story, and this is one we’ll never forget.

When Dudley arrived, months of severe matting hid a heartbreaking reality. Once our medical team carefully removed the matting, they discovered he was blind. With specialized care, his protective halo, and plenty of patience,

Dudley quickly showed us that blindness wouldn’t define him.

What many people didn’t see was the bond forming behind the scenes.

Before long, Matt wasn’t just checking in on Dudley. He was carrying him through the halls, making sure he always felt safe, comfortable, and close.

Today, we’re thrilled to share that Dudley, now named Bumper, has officially been adopted by our CEO, Matt Pepper.

These adorable fur babies are still waiting to meet their future families at our Sterling Heights Petco Adoption Center, and honestly, we’re just as confused as they are.

We have an exciting update on the 66 Redford cats!

So far, 17 cats have been made available for adoption, with four already finding new homes. We're also grateful to four rescue partners who have stepped up to take in 12 of the cats and continue their care. Thank you to our rescue partners Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit, Heavenly Paws of Michigan, Animal House of South East Michigan, and Focus on Ferals for helping give these cats the fresh start they deserve.

Many of the cats are understandably unsocial after their experiences and are being treated for a variety of mostly manageable medical conditions. Because of their unique needs, finding the right placement has taken time, but we're committed to ensuring each cat ends up where they can thrive.

On August 10, 15 of the cats will begin their journey to Morse's Feline Rescue Foundation in Maine. Before any transport, Michigan Humane carefully vets its rescue partners, including working with local animal control authorities, and we're confident these cats will be in good hands. Thank you to Morse's Feline Rescue Foundation for opening your doors to them.

Over the next week, those 15 cats will be spayed or neutered and receive their required health certificates, which are necessary for interstate animal transport.

Travel can be stressful for cats, so we're fortunate to have a specially equipped animal transport Sprinter van. The van was made possible through the generosity of Debbie Romans and the Kohler family. Driven by a two-person team trained in animal transport and animal care, the van helps ensure the cats make the trip as safely and comfortably as possible. We're excited for these cats as they prepare to begin their next chapter in Maine.

Imagine surviving cruelty only to spend the next two years waiting in a shelter.

Before this change in the law, animals rescued from cruelty or neglect cases could spend months or even years in shelters while their cases moved through the courts.

This means animals can move toward their next chapter sooner, shelters can continue helping more animals in need, and victims of cruelty won’t have to endure a second kind of waiting.
