Today is the 12th National Gun Violence Awareness Day.
Today is about remembering lives lost.
It’s about standing with families.
It’s about saying clearly that violence cannot be our normal.
For many of us, this hits close to home. We’ve seen the impact in our neighborhoods. We’ve felt it in our schools, our blocks, our communities.
And we also know prevention works.
In 6 days, we’re heading to Lansing for CVI Day on June 11.
It’s a 45-minute drive.
A 45-minute drive to change and save lives.
We’re bringing Detroit’s voice to the Capitol — youth leaders, community advocates, credible messengers, and residents who believe in safer streets.
If you care about real solutions.
If you believe communities deserve investment.
If you’re ready to show up.
We hope to see you there.
June 11. Lansing. Let’s move with purpose.

F1 banned cigarette sponsorships in 2006. But Big To***co is back on the track.

To***co giants Philip Morris International and BAT are marketing their ni****ne pouch products by sponsoring F1 cars, promoting these harmful and addictive products to young fans. And now F1 is partnering with Disney, LEGO, and Mattel to appeal to kids.

These products pose serious risks to kids – ni****ne is highly addictive, can harm the developing adolescent brain, and can prime the brain for addiction to other drugs.

Marketing for Big To***co’s products should have no place in a sport followed by millions of kids.

We've joined more than 160 organizations worldwide in calling on
F1 to stop allowing the sport to be a vehicle for promoting to***co to kids.

There is currently no “cure” for epilepsy. However, for 10-15% of people with epilepsy, the surgical removal of the seizure focus – the part of the brain where the person’s seizures start – can eliminate all seizure activity. For more than half of the people with epilepsy, medication will control their seizures. Additionally, some children will outgrow their epilepsy, and some adults may have a spontaneous remission.

It’s estimated that 1 in 100 people have epilepsy. There are approximately 2.2 million Americans living with epilepsy.

Epilepsy is NOT contagious. Epilepsy is NOT a psychological disorder.

There is currently no “cure” for epilepsy. For more than half of the people with epilepsy, medication will control their seizures. Additionally, some children will outgrow their epilepsy, and some adults may have a spontaneous remission.

Not everyone can identify specific events or circumstances that affect seizures, but some are able to recognize definite seizure triggers. Some common triggers include:

Forgetting to take prescribed seizure medication
Lack of sleep
Missing meals
Stress, excitement, emotional upset
Menstrual cycle / hormonal changes
Illness or fever
Low seizure medication levels
Medications other than prescribed seizure medication
Flickering lights of computers, television, videos, etc., and sometimes even bright sunlight
Street drugs
