Happy Pride from ❤️🧡💛💚💜💙💗

Allow me to reintroduce myself.

Before the awards, before the headlines, before the stages around the world, there was a little girl from Detroit who fell in love with Shakespeare.

This is the story of how that love became Shakespeare in Detroit.

This Memorial Day, we reflect on sacrifice, courage, and collective humanity through the words of William Shakespeare. ❤️🤍💙

“We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother.”
— Henry V

At Shakespeare in Detroit, we believe classical storytelling continues to help us process history, community, loss, and remembrance. Today we honor those who gave their lives in service.

We Detroited it.

Shakespeare in Detroit’s 2023 production of The Tempest didn’t just stage the storm..

Techno. JIT. Shakespeare. Movement. Rhythm. Memory. Future.

Because when we say “Shakespeare in Detroit,” we don’t just mean a location. We mean culture. We mean innovation. We mean taking one of the greatest playwrights in history and letting him collide with the sound, spirit, and movement of this city.

Directed by Shakespeare in Detroit Founder Sam White and sponsored by the Gilbert Family Foundation.

Shout out to everybody attending Movement weekend. Stay safe, celebrate responsibly, and keep dancing through the storm. ⚡️🖤

YOUTH OPPORTUNITY 🚨⬇️

Attention young designers! Springboard to Design (SB2D), presented by Design Action and led by Tony Award-winning designers Clint Ramos and David Zinn, today announced the launch of The Springboard to Design Fellowship Program, a year-long, tuition-free, virtual mentorship experience for aspiring theatre designers from underrepresented backgrounds.

Designed for high school students and emerging designers ages 18-25, the program connects each Fellow with a professional designer in their chosen discipline—set, costume, lighting, projection, sound, and make-up design—offering direct mentorship, industry insight, and personalized creative feedback.

The Fellowship Program expands access to theatre design by providing mentorship, training, and community, empowering emerging designers to build confidence, develop skills, and envision a future in the arts. Fully virtual, the program allows participants to connect with mentors and peers from around the world.

SB2D pulls Fellowship Mentors from its esteemed community of Guest Artists, who are among the industry’s most celebrated designers. Collectively, the Guest Artists have earned 123 Tony Award nominations and 33 wins across design categories.

The program will begin in the Fall of 2027, running over the course of an academic year through Spring 2028, with regular mentor meetings, cohort sessions, and workshops scheduled throughout.

Applications are open July 1, 2026-March 31, 2027. The application includes a few short written responses, a brief introduction video, and 2-3 samples of artwork. Students will be asked to provide the contact information for one reference. For more information on the application, visit https://springboardtodesign.com/

Celebrating the end of the school year at Breithaupt Career and Technical Center with Detroit Public Schools Community District. The student-prepared food was incredible, and we’re always grateful for opportunities to connect with young people and educators doing meaningful work across the city.

Shakespeare in Detroit loves being active partners with our school communities and deeply appreciates vocational and career training programs like those at Breithaupt that help students build confidence, creativity, and real-world skills for the future.

Second day, second school of invitation-only auditions for our Summer 2026 Youth Conservatory.

This year, we’re working directly with teachers to help identify students for the cohort, creating a more intentional pipeline between our in-school work and summer learning opportunities at Shakespeare in Detroit.

Our goal is to build a focused conservatory experience for young artists who are curious, collaborative, and ready to grow through the work.
