Another lovely edition of x installing at the EMU Student Center finals lounge in December as a rest and decompression space for students at the end of the semester. Huge thanks to + + all the students for coming together to make this happen and continuing the life of Spectral Slumber as a refuge in each iteration ❤️😴💫

After the Spring Western US tour, between catching my breath and shifting into elder canine caretaking I never made any proper recap posts. Part 16 show WTKTD tour, part family trailer road trip, it was a journey full of connection with new spaces, artists, and communities, and of immersion in awestriking landscapes. A year defining and spirit shaping voyage.

Stretching the pocket on this slow folding and unfolding floor phrase in class by
On phrases like this one when there is more space and looseness for dancers to be in the phrase together but moving through it at their own speed, I love to capture that vibe in the drums - holding a more stable anchor in the kick and hi-hat and letting the phrases on snare and toms drag back and catch up, stretching the pocket with breath and gooeyness that opens it up and holds it together at the same time ✨

Friday 10.24 at the Detroit Public Library Main Branch’s Friday Concert Series:
performs “The Wisdom to Know the Difference”
4 pm on the 3rd floor, free and open to the public
The Wisdom to Know the Difference (WTKTD) is Matthew Daher’s electroacoustic solo project exploring the limits and possibilities of control and agency on both sonic and spiritual levels. Using Ableton Live, contact mic drum triggers, and apTrigga samplers, Daher processes acoustic drums and vocals, blends them with lush textures, and triggers other sonic events from the drumkit at varying degrees of randomness. Song-structured webs of intended and unintended sonic consequences emerge in generative, genre blurring compositions that draw on ambient, jazz, art-rock, freak folk, and hip-hop influences.

Started my 10th year creating sounds in real time for dance classes at this semester. Working collaboratively with embodied kinetic energy week in and week out has shaped who I am as a musician on so many levels. Every time I walk into the studio is a new opportunity to develop more presence and responsiveness and delve into unfolding textural and rhythmic nuance. Grateful for all the students and teachers I’ve worked with over the years, and all the trust and leeway I’ve been given to be and grow into who I am ever becoming sonically and offer that to the space each day.

WTKTD Volume I turned 1 year old this month ❤️
Grateful to all who have taken the time to experience this music, either through streaming/purchasing the album or coming through to a show. Grateful for all the artists / venues I’ve connected or reconnected with in bill shares out on the road and in Detroit this past year. 30+ shows on the road coast to coast; grateful for safe travels and so many opportunities to invite folks into these sound worlds. Link in bio to check out the album, get a physical copy (usb drive card!) etc etc thanks for your support ❤️
More captures from the spring western tour in May to come, still waking up from a long summer nap 😴 More upcoming shows to announce too, stay tuned 👂
