The decline of Colorado’s bumblebees
One in five Colorado bumblebee species is at risk of extinction. The western bumblebee alone has declined 72% in the Southern Rocky Mountains. Toxic pesticides called neonics, often coated onto seeds, are a primary threat. These chemicals turn entire plants into hazards for pollinators. Colorado has an opportunity to lead by restricting these dangerous seeds.

Big news for Colorado drivers and wildlife!
On Monday, lawmakers passed SB26-141, the Wildlife Collision Prevention Act. The bill now heads to the Governor’s desk to be signed into law. Thanks to State Senator Dylan Roberts, Cleave Simpson Colorado State Senator District 6, Representative Julie McCluskie, and Representative RickTaggart for sponsoring this bill.
In 2024, Colorado saw more than 3,500 wildlife-vehicle collisions. This legislation provides a consistent revenue stream to build the infrastructure needed to prevent these accidents. Crossings like culverts and overpasses are proven to reduce collisions by over 90%.
How it works:
The law creates a $5 contribution mechanism within the vehicle registration process. It is entirely optional—you can decline the fee when you register your vehicle without any impact on your registration status.
This funding ensures Colorado can continue to lead the way in wildlife protection while leveraging federal matching grants for major safety projects.

These three owlets in Arvada show the impact of staggered hatching. Because Great Horned Owls lay eggs about two to three days apart, the eldest has a significant head start in size and development compared to its younger siblings. It’s a fascinating look at the nesting cycle. Have you spotted any nesting activity in your neighborhood lately?

Environment Colorado staff led a hike at Roxborough State Park over the weekend! We enjoyed the beautiful spring weather and visited the Trash Garden display, which shows different types of waste and how long they pollute the environment for.
Nothing we use for just a few minutes should pollute the earth for centuries. Let’s use less plastic for the sake of our health and our environment.

The I-25 Greenland Overpass is one of the world’s largest wildlife crossings. But did you know that not all wildlife crossings are bridges?
Colorado has over 100 different wildlife crossing structures! These include underpasses and culverts along with more well-known overpasses and bridges.
All of these wildlife crossings help save lives - both animal and human.
