SB132 gives law enforcement additional tools that they can use at the scene of these tragedies to make sure things are properly investigated. Otherwise evidence is lost and families may not know what happened until months later.

Today in Boulder the Governor signed legislation I cosponsored to improve road safety and honor champion bicyclist Magnus White (SB26-132). It is truly an honor to work with The White Line, and Michael & Jill White to pass "Magnus’ Law". This bill holds a special place in my heart because it's purpose is to improve road safety and requires law enforcement officers to offer a voluntary preliminary breath test to drivers involved in crashes that result in a death or serious bodily injury. Keeping Coloradans safe will always be a top priority for me.

I was pleased to join a recent legislative panel with the Metro Denver Apartment Association to give an update on this year’s bills impacting landlords and tenants. Lots of focus on keeping housing affordable and avoiding excessive regulations.

This week was an important one for road safety in Colorado. The Governor signed two bills I sponsored this session. One to increase the penalty for negligent driving that results in the death of a pedestrian, bicyclist, first responder, road worker or other driver (SB26-72), and the other to increase the use of interlock devices on the vehicles of those who have been arrested for driving under the influence. Fewer DUI offenses will mean fewer deaths on our roads (HB26-1242).

Today the Governor signed important legislation I co-sponsored to increase penalties for negligent driving that results in the death of another person. Today we remember the tragic death two years ago of Alex Mackiewicz, a 13 year old boy in Highlands Ranch walking to school. We learned then that Careless Driving Resulting in Death could only be charged as a misdemeanor. This new law will give prosecutors the tools to charge as a felony where warranted when the death is the result of negligence. We thank Alex’s mom Victoria for being such a strong advocate for changing the law.

Today I was pleased to join a legislative panel discussion with the Metro Denver Apartment Association. It was great to hear about the challenges and concerns of apartment owners and managers, particularly around the issues of affordability and regulatory burdens.
