Most leaders skip this part because it's easier to do that than to put in the work.

Self-trust looks like:
- Making a tough call, and standing behind it.
- Failing at something, and learning from it instead of carrying it around for weeks.
- Not needing everyone in the room to validate you before you feel good about decisions.

How to build self-trust:
- Notice what your inner critic is saying. That voice telling you you're about to get it wrong is your saboteur. Start by just noticing when it shows up.
- Look back before you look forward. Self-trust gets built by examining the past: the decisions you made, the hard things you survived, the moments you actually got it right.
- Stop waiting to be ready. Self-trust doesn't show up before you act; it takes practice. Just go for it!

That's what this week's newsletter is all about.

You can feel when a structure is working against you.

The process that slows everything down but nobody says anything about. The system nobody questions because it's "just how we do things around here." The meeting that exists for no real reason but has been on the calendar for three years since "that's the way it's always been."

A lot of leaders will work around those things without attempting to make lasting, real change. They adapt, they compensate, they just strong arm it and make it work anyway. (But then they wonder why it's so exhausting!!)

At some point the structure itself has to be the work that gets done. Ask yourself these questions: Who has decision-making authority? How does performance actually gets measured? What gets rewarded, and what gets ignored? What is our culture that we tout vs. the culture that really exists?

This is not an HR project. This is a leadership responsibility. (I mean, that's why you're here, right?)

When you change how your team is structured to operate, you change what's possible for them and you automatically begin to raise the ceiling for everyone on your team. That's the part of leadership development we don't talk about enough and that's why Bold Font Coaching & Consulting is here to help guide you through these changes.

Are you excelling in your career and growing in your role without ever taking a minute to step back and look at how you've gotten here?

In fact, many leaders who are at the top of their game haven't ever really given a minute to stop and make a plan about their career trajectory or assess if what they're doing is really aligned with their values.

Questions to ponder:
- How did you get here?
- Where are you going?
- How will you get to that point?
- Who will be there along the way?
- What's the end goal?

Building a vision for yourself isn't just an item on the to do list, it's really your entire to do list. So let's get on it.

Bold Font Coaching and Consulting can help with building your vision for your career over the next 5, 10, or 20 years so you can be the driver of your decisions going forward. "Like" this post so you don't miss more from us!

I get it. You feel caught red-handed right now because we all do this!

There's that one name in your inbox, the one that makes your stomach drop when you see it because things are awkward or feel unfixable.

Keeping it short and professional isn't working, ignoring them isn't working, trying to "be the better person" also isn't working. So what will?

The skills that repair that relationship are the same ones that make you a better leader. Trust. Real communication. Boundaries.

This takes practice and we're here for you through it all.

The best leaders I know have one thing in common: They know themselves well.

It may not always be perfect, but they've done the work to understand their values, their triggers, and what they're actually capable of. That self-trust is what confidence is built on.

You can't lead people effectively if you don't have a solid read on yourself first. Because guess what? Your team feels it!

Self-awareness is the entire foundation of leadership; it isn't a soft skill. Everything else gets built on top of it.

Most people wait too long to address a work relationship that's off track. By the time they do, there's a lot more to clean up. The Font goes deeper on this.

Remote teams can struggle because leaders skip the part where they actually get to know people.

So how do you engage your direct reports? (Yes, it takes more than "how's the project going?") It's more difficult to built relationships organically when you're in your own bubbles at home in different states.

Do you know what's going on in their lives? What are they into outside of work? What their likes and dislikes are? This is important because people work differently when they feel seen: You'll see better communication, less turnover, and more engaged employees.

βœ… βœ…
Here's two simple things I've seen in hundreds of companies that actually work:
1. Start 1:1s with just 5 minutes that have nothing to do with work. Ask about the weekend trip they mentioned. Remember the thing they shared last month and follow up on it. Latch on to a hobby they do and ask about it. Simply just be a person who gives a damn!

2. Don't schedule remote "culture building" events. They're mostly overrated. The teams I've seen build the most trust remotely didn't have more Zoom happy hours, they just had leaders who treated people like whole humans.

So what's something your team has done to actually build connection remotely?

πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡ Drop it below, I'm always looking for new ideas as to what's working.

Your team isn't dropping the ball, they're guessing what you meant.
Clarity is a leadership skill, and like every skill, it can be learned (and practiced!).
Save this if you needed the reminder.
Share it with the leader in your life who can relate.
