In February 1978 I began a career in the rug business as an apprentice to an Iranian man named Hamid Sharifzadeh. I had travelled extensively in rug producing countries and somehow it all made sense. Fragments of larger European tapestries were popular in the early 1900's as decorations in elegant American homes. Generally cut down to sizes that fit modern walls (4x8 was common) they are often in rough condition and dirty. We clean and restore them and every once in a while a one comes in with a captivating design.

Meet our Spring Sale dog, Kaiju!
In Japanese, “Kaiju” means “strange creature.” Kaiju has a lot of spunky character and is rather unique looking, so the name fits and sounds nice when you call him. He is about equal parts bull terrier, German shephard, and black Labrador.
Kaiju sits on a Iranian Senneh pile carpet from around 1900. We’ll post more on that shortly.

North West Persian village rug came in recently with an unusual inscription. Coarsely knotted so the inscription is 'low resolution'. Wondering if anyone has any ideas. Looks like Persian, but I don't know. Dated 1887 in two places. Opinions?

In a recent FaceBook discussion Arto Tavukciyan - an Armenian rug student and expert - commented on the existence of single wefted rugs made by ethnic Armenian weavers in villages in Western Iran. The rug below may be one. It is Turkish/symmetrically knotted, single wefted, and looks a lot like an older Hammedan district rug on the back. Though there is no specific confirming evidence that it was woven by Armenians, the design somehow 'says' it could be. Opinions and comments are very welcome....what do you think? Woven 'transverse', about 3' x 6'.
