Late last week the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure agreed upon their version of a new Surface Transportation bill.

Environment America is happy to report good news: this bill includes the reauthorization of the Wildlife Crossings Pilot Program.

The new transportation bill called the BUILD America 250 Act provides $400 million over 5 years for planning and building wildlife crossings. It also removes the term "pilot" from the progam making it permanent.

While the Wildlife Crossings Program, a clear winner for wildlife conservation and road safety, was included in the House version, the program now awaits Senate action where more long and important deliberation awaits.

We hope the Senate will bring further support to the program, and will increase the funding to $100 million per year.

Environment America and our 30 state organizations thank the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure for including reauthorization of the Wildlife Crossing Program in the BUILD America 250 Act.
