We had a blast teaching at . While prepping curriculum for our intensive this sequence rolled out really organically. (Ryan is always cool about getting behind an Erica artsy process, which helps lots.). This day, the pieces felt like they were lying around to be found, & literally went with the song that was playing in the gym.
We were stoked, and it was perfect for our class. We taught all these skills (and more) but spent time on “Musicality for human acrobats”. An idea that you don’t need to have a dance background to be interesting.
An 8 count for an arm stroke/grip prep, a 4 count for a leg pet and boom.
Characters and relationship established. 💣

My three year old is sick. I’m at the airport headed home from this gig to help him blow his perfect lil nose. Being his Mom is the most important thing. Period. Don’t mistake that truth for a belief that being a parent is the ONLY thing in a someone’s identity. 🔥

This is so random, but I loved this job.
Last gig before the pandemic. We were opening a fancy department store. Entertaining big wigs, execs and brass invited to a reception before launch. A high level of privilege was shared between the guests.
At some point, a woman got her stiletto heel stuck in the grates of an escalator. No one was harmed, just annoyed.
It. Was. Stuck.
Then, for quite a stretch after, a flurry of frenetic energy surrounded the situation. The shoe in question was a glossy, red bottomed Louboutin heel. Something about it amused me. All the people stopping the stairs, working with tools, wringing their hands for the owner as they rescued an expensive shoe from a common machine.
It was the kind of low stakes drama you want on a gig. No injuries, all absurdities.
Anyway, Here’s throwing me in the air days before the world stopped.

To build a tuned PVC Slap-a-phone instrument (AKA an End Struck Plosive Acoustic instrument(?) the length of each pipe is determined by this formula:
The speed of sound (meters per second) divided by the frequency of the note you want to use (the exact key on a piano), minus the diameter of your pipe (in meters) minus the adjusted interior bend length of any joint connections. This was so much more involved than I realized when I was like “My 2 yr old loves percussion, my mom & I are bald durning her chemo, let’s be Blue Man Group!
