I found this ryokan while exploring the perimeter of Kyoto on Google Maps. Getting there from Tokyo in a day was a bit gnarly (6 trains), but this garden alone made it worthwhile. There’s a word in Japanese: shinrin-yoku, which kind-of means “forest bathing”. I think I felt that.

Next up is a beach town on the outskirts of Tokyo called Kamakura. Once the seat of political power in Japan back in the 1100’s (and with a very bloody history according to Wikipedia) it’s now got a vibe more like a beach town in Cali. Pictured are Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, Sanmon Gate, and the giant Buddha at Kotoku-in.

Scenes from around . We stumbled on this one after finding a torii tunnel on the edge of Akasaka that felt like a wormhole.

One of the standout urban moments in Tokyo for my wife and I was exploring the area. A “city within a city” by . We spent hours wandering the intricate system of shops and restaurants, the open courtyard where kids were laughing and playing tag, and just sitting in the massive lobby of the Mori JP Tower watching the constant river of people flow through.
The blending of public and private (and of metal/nature, modern/traditional) in Tokyo was a refreshing marvel to my American mind. Last two pictures show the view from Tokyo Tower.
