Why are we surveilling Black and Brown young people?

According to the Denver Post, the Aurora Police Department, in partnership with Aurora Public Schools and Cherry Creek Schools, installed Flock cameras in high school parking lots.

Cherry Creek Schools, where white students make up the largest racial demographic, has since removed its cameras.

Aurora Public Schools, where the majority of students are Black and Brown, and many come from low-income families, still has them.

Surveillance technology, criminalization, and policing do not belong in our communities, much less in our schools.

Our students deserve safe and welcoming learning environments.

¿Por qué vigilamos a los jóvenes negros y de color?

Según el Denver Post, el Departamento de Policía de Aurora, en colaboración con las Escuelas Públicas de Aurora y el distrito escolar de Cherry Creek, instaló cámaras Flock en los estacionamientos de las escuelas secundarias.

To celebrate the start of Latine Heritage Month, our young people participated in a Nuestra Alma talking circle about cultural identity and the role of colonization in the loss and suppression of our identities.

When colonial pressures attempt to shape our identity, remembering who we are and practicing our traditions is one of the strongest ways we can help to dismantle these systems. 🫀🌱

We are so proud of our students for engaging in these important conversations. ✊🏽

Para celebrar el inicio del Mes de la Herencia Latina, nuestros jóvenes participaron en un círculo de diálogo Nuestra Alma sobre la identidad cultural y el papel de la colonización en la pérdida y supresión de nuestras identidades.

Cuando las presiones coloniales intentan moldear nuestra identidad, recordar quiénes somos y practicar nuestras tradiciones es una de las formas más poderosas de ayudar a desmantelar estos sistemas. 🫀🌱

Rest in Power, Pierre Damas Bel. 🕊️

Pierre, a college student, took his own life on Monday after losing his immigration status and being forced to wear an ankle monitor.

Pierre’s story is a painful reminder that this administration’s immigration policies have far-reaching consequences. It not only affects people’s status but also their physical health, mental health, sense of safety, and everyday lives.

Pierre’s father shared that Pierre went back to ICE twice, asking for the monitor to be removed so he could return to playing the sport he loved.

“I came to this country to pursue my education. I didn’t come here to commit a crime or hurt anyone,” Pierre wrote on Instagram in late July. “Yet now I’m walking through the streets of the United States with a GPS monitor on my leg, carrying a feeling of shame and humiliation that I never imagined I would experience.”

Constant surveillance and criminalization are unacceptable and should not be normalized. Our people should be able to live their lives without constant surveillance, with stability, and with dignity.

Pierre, un estudiante universitario, se quitó la vida el lunes tras perder su estatus migratorio y verse obligado a llevar un rastreador GPS.

La historia de Pierre es un doloroso recordatorio de que las políticas migratorias de esta administración tienen consecuencias de gran alcance. No solo afectan el estatus de las personas, sino también su salud física y mental, su sensación de seguridad y su vida cotidiana.

El padre de Pierre contó que su hijo acudió dos veces a ICE para pedir que le retiraran el dispositivo y así poder volver a practicar el deporte que tanto amaba.

«Vine a este país para cursar mis estudios. No vine aquí a cometer delitos ni a hacer daño a nadie», escribió Pierre en Instagram a finales de julio. «Sin embargo, ahora camino por las calles de Estados Unidos con un rastreador GPS en la pierna, cargando con una sensación de vergüenza y humillación que jamás imaginé experimentar».

La vigilancia constante y la criminalización son inaceptables y no deben normalizarse. Nuestra gente debería poder vivir sus vidas sin vigilancia constante, con estabilidad y con dignidad.

Descansa en poder, Pierre.

A new report by the National Immigration Law Center and the Education for All Campaign outlines the devastating effects of federal immigration enforcement on our students and schools.

The national report finds that ICE activity is occurring near schools, bus stops, homes, grocery stores, and other everyday spaces, affecting every aspect of a student’s life. Students are also experiencing severe emotional trauma. The constant fear of family separation is contributing to panic attacks, anxiety, and a loss of the psychological safety children need to learn. In addition, while Plyler v. Doe protects every child’s right to attend K–12 public school regardless of immigration status, the federal rollback of protections for “sensitive locations” has made schools and their surrounding communities more vulnerable to enforcement.

Additionally, the community’s work here in Denver was recognized in the report. Students, parents, and educators have been continuously fighting back against these attacks and their impact.

Movimiento Poder, alongside the Alliance for Educational Justice, the Advancement Project, and the Organizing Revival Network, hosted the first-ever National Pro-Democracy Youth Organizing Bootcamp, bringing together hundreds of youth leaders and organizers from across the country.

Together, young people learned about campaigns happening in communities across the country and built relationships with other young leaders who are organizing around public education, immigrant rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and the well-being of their communities.

We can’t wait to see the impact these young people continue to have in their communities and the power they continue to build. 🔥

¡Poder para los jóvenes! ✊🏽

Movimiento Poder, junto con la Alliance for Educational Justice, el Advancement Project y la Organizing Revival Network, organizó el primer Campamento Nacional de Capacitación en Organización Juvenil Pro-Democracia, reuniendo a cientos de líderes y organizadores jóvenes de todo el país.

Juntos, los jóvenes conocieron campañas que se llevan a cabo en comunidades de todo el país y establecieron vínculos con otros líderes jóvenes que se organizan en torno a la educación pública, los derechos de los inmigrantes, los derechos LGBTQ+ y el bienestar de sus comunidades.

Estamos ansiosos por ver el impacto que estos jóvenes seguirán teniendo en sus comunidades y el poder que continuarán construyendo. 🔥

When immigrant communities are under attack at the national level, we know that protecting our people also means building power right here at home.

During this year's Colorado Health Symposium, we had the honor of giving a flash talk to over 600 people, sharing the community's fight to protect immigrant students and families in Denver Public Schools. We focused on community-led narrative strategy, immigrant advocacy, and grassroots organizing at a moment when many communities are navigating fear, misinformation, and rapidly shifting political conditions.

We also had the opportunity to connect with inspiring individuals from across the country during our poster session "Fighting National Attacks at the Local Level: Protecting Our Immigrant Community in Denver."

We’re proud to share this work, and even prouder of the young people, parents, and community members who continue to lead the way. ❤️‍🔥

Cuando las comunidades inmigrantes sufren ataques a nivel nacional, sabemos que proteger a nuestra gente también significa construir poder aquí mismo, en nuestra propia comunidad.

Durante el Simposio de Salud de Colorado de este año, tuvimos el honor de ofrecer una breve presentación a más de 600 personas sobre la lucha comunitaria para proteger a los estudiantes y familias inmigrantes en las Escuelas Públicas de Denver. Nos centramos en estrategias narrativas impulsadas por la comunidad, la defensa de los derechos de los inmigrantes y la organización de base, en un momento en que muchas comunidades enfrentan el miedo, la desinformación y un panorama político que cambia rápidamente.

También tuvimos la oportunidad de conectar con personas inspiradoras de todo el país durante nuestra sesión de pósteres titulada "Combatir ataques nacionales a nivel local: proteger a nuestra comunidad inmigrante en Denver".

Nos enorgullece compartir este trabajo y, aún más, sentir orgullo por los jóvenes, padres y miembros de la comunidad que continúan liderando el camino. ❤️‍🔥

Last week, we wrapped up our POWERFUL Summer of Action & Liberation camp. ✊🏽

Last week, our young people engaged in a history of Pol-ICE workshop, learned about the history of education, developed their organizing skills during an Organizing 101 workshop, and made some art during a Nuestra Alma session on Wildlife Without Borders.

Our young people are putting in the WORK. They are using their summer to organize, learn, engage, build community, and work towards a better future. We couldn't be more proud of our students for their important work and cannot wait to see what they do next. ✊🏽

La semana pasada concluimos nuestro impactante campamento de verano "Acción y Liberación" (Summer of Action & Liberation). ✊🏽

Durante la semana, nuestros jóvenes participaron en un taller sobre la historia de la Poli-Migra, aprendieron sobre la historia de la educación, desarrollaron sus habilidades de organización comunitaria en un taller introductorio sobre el tema y crearon arte durante una sesión de Nuestra Alma centrada en la vida silvestre sin fronteras (Wildlife Without Borders).

Nuestros jóvenes están trabajando duro. Aprovecharon el verano para organizarse, aprender, participar, fortalecer la comunidad y trabajar por un futuro mejor. No podríamos estar más orgullosos de nuestros estudiantes por su importante trabajo; estamos ansiosos por ver qué harán a continuación. ✊🏽
