JAMLAC was proud to be present at the Third Annual Community Well-Being Resource Fair hosted at Our Lady Church at the Adams Community Center in Commerce City. 💜⚖️🙌🏼🥳

Our team members were there connecting with community members, sharing resources, answering questions, and helping families and older adults navigate available support and legal services.

The event organizer shared that over 150 individuals were served through the support of 55 vendors and organizations — an incredible example of what can happen when community organizations come together to serve and support our community. ✨Collaboration is key! ✨

As the need continues to grow, so does our commitment to older adults in our community. If you know an older adult who may need legal support, resources, or guidance, please help us connect with them. Together, we can continue expanding access to justice, dignity, and support for aging members of our community.

A time to reflect on the extraordinary individuals who help make our work possible every day! At JAMLAC, our volunteers truly show up and show out.

From long- and short-term volunteers to interpreters, translators, and pro bono attorneys, volunteers play a vital role in advancing our mission to seek justice for those facing poverty—affirming dignity and strengthening each person’s ability to move forward with confidence and stability. In April alone, volunteers contributed hundreds of hours of service, stepping in with compassion, professionalism, and a deep commitment to our community.

In moments of uncertainty, their dedication steadies us. Their kindness, energy, and can-do spirit continue to inspire our team and the clients we serve. We are deeply grateful for each and every one of them.

Recently, Sulma Mendoza, JAMLAC’s Immigration Director, shared a story that captures what justice looks like in action—and what it takes behind the scenes to make it possible.

A young client came to JAMLAC with very little time left. He was about to turn 21 in April—an age that would close the door on his ability to apply for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), a critical protection for vulnerable youth.
There was an additional challenge: a previous attorney, outside of JAMLAC, had made an error in the predicate orders required for his case. If the issue was not corrected immediately, this young person would lose his opportunity for stability, protection, and lawful status in the United States.

There was no time to wait.

Sulma partnered with JAMLAC’s Family Law team, JAMLAC Paralegal Claudia Mendoza and Attorney Jose Escobar, to act quickly. Understanding the urgency and what was at stake, the team worked with diligence and precision to correct the issue and ensure everything was properly in place before the deadline.
Because of this coordinated effort, Sulma was able to submit the corrected documents just in time—preserving this young person’s eligibility to apply for SIJS before aging out.

While the final decision is still pending, this case reflects how timely legal intervention can prevent devastating outcomes for young people. By protecting access to this critical pathway, the team helped keep the door open to safety, stability, and a future with greater opportunity.

Yesterday we were overjoyed to celebrate Jose Escobar — JAMLAC’s Associate Director & Family Law Attorney, one of our longtime leaders whose contributions have helped shape our organization since the very beginning. 💜⚖️

Jose has been part of JAMLAC’s journey from the early days, helping build the foundation of the organization and even writing one of JAMLAC’s first major grants — opening doors that helped expand access to justice for so many families in our community.

2026 is a BIG year — and May 11th was an especially meaningful day.
Jose officially turned the big 6-0 *and* officially retired from military service after decades of dedication and leadership.

His life has been rooted in service — to his country, to justice, and to the community. We are incredibly grateful for his leadership, wisdom, and heart throughout the years.

Congratulations, Jose, on this extraordinary milestone and next chapter! 👏🇺🇸✨

Today we had the opportunity to visit the Mexican Consulate and meet with several Notarios Públicos from Mexico. Thank you so much for inviting us to join you today. 🇲🇽⚖️

The Notarios Públicos were incredibly helpful in explaining how the legal system in Mexico works and how it differs from the United States. It was fascinating to learn more about the level of authority and responsibility notarios hold in Mexico. We discussed end-of-life documents, probate processes, wills, powers of attorney, advance directives, and many other important legal matters that impact families on both sides of the border.

While we were there, we were also able to obtain support for Mexican Nationals under the PALE program, and we received some amazing news. They shared that our PALE contract is considered one of the best-performing in the entire United States out of all 53 Mexican Consulates. They mentioned that our work has produced some of the strongest results they’ve seen — something truly special to be proud of as a team. 💜⚖️

Thank you again for the opportunity to learn, connect, and continue strengthening these important relationships and resources for our community. 🙏🏻
