"The reason diversity is really important in AI, not just in data sets but also in researchers, is that you need people who just have this social sense of how things are. We are in a diversity crisis for AI. In addition to having technical conversations, conversations about law, conversations about ethics, we need to have conversations about diversity in AI. We need all sorts of diversity in AI. And this needs to be treated as something that’s extremely urgent." - Timnit Gebru
“We’re in a diversity crisis”: cofounder of Black in AI on what’s poisoning algorithms in our lives Timnit Gebru looks around the AI world and sees almost no one who looks like her. That’s a problem for all of us.

What's the most unsettling interaction you've had with AI? For Natalie it was realizing that not only does it "hallucinate" facts, it also hallucinates its own self knowledge in ways that eerily mimic humans' own self-delusions.
A Hallucination of Beneficence - When AI Wants to Please, Above All Else Natalie recounts a recent interaction with ChatGPT, when it promised something it couldn't deliver and set up an elaborate lie to cover it.

Nonprofits! As end-of-year giving ramps up / comes to a close, be aware of this scam. We've heard of several nonprofits who have received donations by check, followed by a request for a refund.
It's an especially cruel way to make a buck, but hopefully you won't encounter it this year (or ever).

Natalie's not a DJ, but she does know a little something about Google Ad Grants. That's pretty much the same thing.
If your Ad Grant campaigns aren't reaching enough people, this blog post is for you. https://www.newwhyweb.com/blog/why-arent-my-google-ad-grant-ads-working/

When WordPress websites are hacked, it's frequently because of out-of-date plugins and other weaknesses that most people wouldn't even know to look for.
Unless you really want random Cialis ads on your website (no shade if you do!), we recommend managed hosting. We offer this to keep WordPress websites up to date, safe, secure, and looking good.
Ruh roh. Are you using this plugin for your Wordpress site? We don't use it for any of our websites, but if you are, go update it now! https://www.searchenginejournal.com/wordpress-cache-plugin-vulnerability-affects-5-million-websites/525149/

I (Natalie) started doing SEO around the end of 2009, and it's been a wild ride. Okay, maybe not wild, but certainly roller coaster-ish. With that said, some things haven't changed all that much. Google wants to believe that your website is important and well-liked, and overall the ways you convince Google of that are pretty much the same--as long as you're being ethical about it.
The biggest change in Google search is that Google now favors itself and its own properties over external websites. This is why you need to be active on as many of Google's properties (think YouTube, Google Business, etc.) as possible and not just rely on your website to bring you traffic.
With the recent anti-trust ruling, we will see more big changes in how Google works over the next few years, and New Why is always expanding and adapting how we do SEO to meet these changes.
Here I am at my first SEO conference in the summer of 2011. Ah, to be young and innocent again, hugging a robot in Seattle.
