I spent my first twenty years of gardening building raised beds the hard way. Shoveling expensive topsoil, fighting compaction, and spending every August evening tied to the end of a watering hose just to keep my tomatoes from fainting. Then I stumbled onto an old European trick that completely changed how I put beds together. Instead of filling the whole thing with dirt, you start the base with something else entirely. Something you probably have rotting away at the edge of your yard right now. It feels a bit wrong the first time you do it, piling it up like a burial mound. But down in the dark, that base layer acts like a massive, slow-releasing sponge. You can go weeks without watering in the dead of summer. It slowly feeds the soil from the bottom up. It even generates a bit of heat as it breaks down, gently pushing your growing season a few weeks longer into the autumn. Nature doesn't waste anything, and once you figure out how to stack it right, neither will you. I wrote down exactly how to build one of these beds from scratch before you start planning next year's layout. Have a read.

People entirely panic when June arrives and their vegetable beds are still half empty. They assume they've missed the boat and the summer season is already a write-off. The truth is, the soil has finally reached a decent temperature and things will actually grow instead of just sitting there sulking in the damp. Getting certain seeds in the ground now is exactly what your garden needs for a strong late-summer harvest.
