Happy 100th to my mother, Maidi Miles, AKA The Drinking Lady! Born and raised in Chicago, then met my father in Peru, VT, which was at the time a bit of an artist colony. She went to the Art Institute of Chicago for photography, and her black and white pictures are hanging in our stores.
We lived in Rome from 1957-58, and the fabulous picture of her drinking out of the bottle was taken in a field outside of Rome. Mother to 6 children, funny, strong, athletic, kind, creative, brave, and beautiful.
Raise a glass to Maidi Miles tonight!

Wine tasting tonight!
Fridays are for wine tasting, even snowy Fridays. This Friday is extra special, as we'll have a beautiful line up of imported Italian Vino from Ethica Wines to show. Consider them Easter wines or Spring wines, or just delicious wines. Either way, you'll want to come by and titillate your taste buds, as well as learn a little something about a very diverse, large and interesting land of a thousand grapes. We dare you to say something negative about Italian wines following the tasting.

Around here, we like read to read stuff that makes us hungry and thirsty for delicious things. Edward Chisholm’s “A Waiter in Paris” does that, but it also tells a gritty, dark and, frankly, pretty nasty (though hilarious) tale of what it’s like behind the scenes of the picturesque Parisian restaurants we’ve all come to romanticize in our heads. It’s a story of a young writer’s struggle to survive in Paris, of food and lots and lots of drink, of friendships and of the dark and challenging and competitive side of the restaurant industry, which those privy to it will recognize whether they’ve done a stint in Paris or otherwise. We recommend you grab some butter, some baguette and a bottle of wine and start reading!

Happy (belated) 1 year anniversary Kristen Lindbeck! Now, you might be saying wait, hasn't she been there before? Indeed, she was with us a few years ago, and she's back 'cause we're more fun. She's smart and full of fun wine facts!
We just did a wine and cheese tasting for a downtown condo building, and she told them everything they wanted to know about these wines, and a few things they didn't know they needed to know. So come see us and have some fun with Ms. Lindbeck!

GET COOKING WITH BSJ: Cooking Without Wine or Beer What if you don’t drink alcoholic beverages, for whatever reason, and the ingredient list on the recipe for coq au vin includes 1/4 cup brandy and 1/2 bottle red wine? Or, a few minutes in, the risotto recipe says, “toss in one glassful of dry white wine”? Or, to make the batter for an “auth...

Dear Customers:
Happy New Year! Thanks to you, our wine shop finished 2024 strongly. We are extremely grateful that you stayed with us throughout the year.
We plan on keeping the good vibes going with always-interesting wines, (almost) weekly tastings, special pre-orders, and plenty of communication as the year rolls out. More fun!
2024 was a landmark year for stores such as ours. Honestly, after Proposition 125 passed, allowing wine in grocery stores, we really did not know what to expect. After the change, I was shopping in a Safeway, and I watched a man walk in, grab a basket, walk by the wines they had placed by the
entrance . . . then slowly turn around, grab a bottle, and continue into the store.
I thought to myself: "And that’s how it happens. It’s a Monday
afternoon, I'm in a hurry, what’s the harm in grabbing a bottle while I’m here?”
The New Year brings a stark Denver Gazette article outlining the
harm. https://denvergazette.com/news/state/liquor-stores-shuttered-colorado-wine-grocery/article_888784cc-acf1-11ef-8758-f31da604a524.html
It’s not only retail stores that are feeling the heat. Breweries and
distributors — some small and some not so small — also have closed their doors.
So thank you! Thank you for browsing, buying, chatting, tasting, letting us serve you, and keeping us going. A neighborhood wine shop is a place to pick up just the right bottle for dinner, take a gift to a friend, or wander around for a minute. And when you’re attached to a grocery store, even better!
