Some books entertain you…and some books quietly crawl into your chest, sit there, and force you to think about your entire existence.

This was absolutely one of those books for me.

Klune has this incredible ability to take something massive and overwhelming (like the literal end of the world) and make it feel deeply intimate, personal, and heartbreakingly human. This story doesn’t just focus on catastrophe, but on what people choose to do when they know the clock is running out.

What I loved most was how beautifully it showcased both the very best and the absolute worst of humanity. Faced with inevitable endings, some people choose love, grace, and connection…while others let confusion and fear bring out their ugliest parts. It felt painfully realistic and made every emotional moment hit even harder.

At the heart of it all, though, was our main couple and the way they were given the chance to confront regrets they may have otherwise carried forever. There was something so tender and devastating about watching them choose honesty, forgiveness, and love when time was no longer something they could take for granted. Especially in times where they played their lives back, reminiscing on their long lives together, and all the ups and downs that journey presented.

And the writing? Impeccable. Truly. Klune knows exactly how to reach into your ribcage and emotionally rearrange your organs. Every line felt intentional, raw, and achingly beautiful. I never get tired of how Klune gets my feels FEELING. It’s part of why he’s my favorite author. And part of why reading his books in my early reading journey turned me into a reading fanatic.

More than anything, this book left me thinking: what would I do if I knew the world was ending? Who would I run to? What would I regret? What would matter most?

Another new Klune, another phenomenal read.

this one is heavy, raw, and doesn’t pull its punches…but that’s exactly what makes it unforgettable. the angst? suffocating. the emotional depth? off the charts. and the way it digs into pain, healing, and messy, complicated love?? yeah…I’m unwell.
