Update on Roo!
Earlier this week Roo had her appointment with dermatology at CSU for her suspected Lupoid Onychondystrophy. Ultimately, we chose not to do definitive testing of the nails to prove the diagnosis as an amputation would have been necessary. And as many of you know, Roo is very sensitive and recovery from amputation of a toe would vastly affect her quality of life.
Moving forward we have decided to make adjustments to her supplement and medications. And will have a recheck in two months to evaluate the nails and make adjustments accordingly.
She will be a shoe wearing girly while on walks and when she is playing to lessen to risk of damaging the nails even more.
She is in good spirits and she has had more days where she doesn’t appear to be in as much pain as she was when we started this journey.
Roo is also very proud of herself. She didn’t p*e on anyone be at CSU, she was very very brave.

These guys are not mad that it’s 61° in February
Roo will chase me down if I don’t allow her to do head presses after looking at her toes.

Mention even the small things to your vet.
Over the summer I noticed Roos nails started to grow thicker but also more brittle. I thought it was weird but also thought maybe it was because she was getting a little bit older and I wasn’t trimming her nails quite as often as I used to.
In August, she lost a nail and it grew back a little deformed.
Fast forward to the last few weeks she started limping intermittently and choosing to withdraw and spend more time in her kennel. So we went to the vet. She had been given a preliminary diagnosis of Lupoid Onychodystrophy, and is starting treatment to get her walking more comfortably.
Something as simple as “weird looking nails” was the first sign of an issue.
So, lesson learned. NOTHING is too small worth mentioning to your vet.
