Happy ! Today we’re busting mammal Myths! Think you know mammals? Think again! Today, we're debunking 3 common misconceptions about our furry (and not-so-furry) friends. Get ready to have your mind blown! 🤯 Share your own mammal misconceptions in the comments or tag us in your story!
🐿️ [Arctic Ground Squirrel] "All mammals are warm-blooded" - Not quite! Arctic Ground Squirrels can drop their body temp below freezing during hibernation. Talk about chilling out! Even the naked mole rat plays it cool, adjusting its body temp to its surroundings.
🥚 [Platypus and Echidna] "Mammals can't lay eggs" - Surprise! Monotremes like platypuses and echidnas are the rule-breakers here, laying eggs and still being 100% mammal. Nature's full of surprises!
🐳 [Whales and Dolphins] "All mammals have fur or hair" - Not these smooth operators! Whales and dolphins ditched their 'dos ages ago, adapting to life in the big blue. Evolution's got some tricks up its sleeve!
These mind-blowing facts show just how much we're still learning about the incredible world of mammals. The field of mammalogy is crying out for fresh perspectives and innovative thinking. Who knows? You might be the one to uncover the next big mammal mystery! 🔍🦁🦇🐘

Happy Week! 🎉 A career in mammalogy offers the chance to study Earth's most fascinating creatures while contributing to conservation efforts and potentially recovering endangered species populations. Your unique background and perspective could lead to the next big wildlife recovery breakthrough!
[Gray Wolf] : Reintroduction efforts in Yellowstone National Park, beginning in 1995, have led to a remarkable recovery of the gray wolf population in the Northern Rocky Mountains. Once virtually extinct in the lower 48 states, there are now over 6,000 gray wolves in the contiguous United States.
[Southern White Rhinoceros] : Thought to be extinct in the early 20th century, this species has rebounded thanks to intensive protection and management, particularly in South Africa. Their numbers have grown from fewer than 100 in 1895 to over 20,000 today, making it the most numerous of all rhino species.
[Giant Panda] : In the 1980s, giant pandas were on the brink of extinction with only about 1,000 individuals left. Extensive conservation efforts in China, including habitat protection and captive breeding programs, have increased the population to over 1,800 in the wild by 2020. This success led to their reclassification from "endangered" to "vulnerable" in 2016.

Happy Week! Re-wild your perspective and rethink how WILD mammals can truly be! To understand the scale of restoration goals for wildlife conservation, let's explore the spectrum of wildness in mammals. These extreme comparisons showcase the incredible diversity and adaptability of mammals across various environments and conditions. Let us know which mammal fact surprised you the most and share in the comments!
[Blue whale and bumblebee bat] Size - Largest vs. Smallest: The blue whale, reaching lengths of up to 100 feet (30 meters) and weighing up to 200 tons, is the largest mammal. In contrast, the bumblebee bat, also known as the Kitti's hog-nosed bat, is the smallest mammal, weighing only 2 grams and measuring about 1.1-1.3 inches (30-40 mm) in length.
[Arctic Fox and Addax Antelope] Environment - Coldest vs Hottest: The Arctic fox thrives in temperatures as low as -58°F (-50°C) in the Arctic tundra. On the opposite extreme, the addax antelope can survive in the scorching Sahara Desert with temperatures reaching 122°F (50°C).
[Bowhead whale and Etruscan shrew] Lifespan - Longest vs. Shortest: Bowhead whales are known to live over 200 years, making them the longest-lived mammals. In contrast, the Etruscan shrew has a lifespan of only about 2 years, one of the shortest (and smallest) among mammals.
[Three-toed Sloth and Cheetah] Speed - Slowest vs Fastest: The three-toed sloth moves at an average speed of 0.15 mph (0.24 km/h), making it one of the slowest mammals. At the other end of the spectrum, the cheetah is the fastest land mammal, capable of reaching speeds up to 70 mph (113 km/h) in short bursts.
[Yak and Cuvier's beaked whale] Altitude - Highest vs. Lowest Living: The yak can live at altitudes up to 20,000 feet (6,100 meters). Conversely, Cuvier's beaked whale holds the record for deepest diving mammal, plunging to depths of 9,816 feet (2,992 meters) below sea level.

Happy Week! Cutting-edge studies in mammalogy are unveiling fascinating insights into animal behavior, biology, and adaptation. We're sharing findings that highlight the value of inclusive scientific perspectives in advancing our understanding of the natural world. Throughout the week, we'll explore the mysteries and celebrate the majesty of mammalian life follow for more
[Bats] Echolocation Mastery Studies on bat echolocation sheds light on the intricate flight patterns and advanced sensory adaptations of the only free flying mammal on the planet.
[African Wild Dogs] Democracy in the Wild In a fascinating 2017 discovery, scientists observed that African wild dogs use sneezing as a form of "voting" to make group decisions about hunting. This finding challenges our understanding of animal communication and social structures.
[Naked Mole Rat] Longevity Lived and Cancer-Resistant Rodents Exciting research in 2018 on naked mole rats found these extraordinary mammals can live up to 30 years and show remarkable resistance to cancer. The study identified unique molecular mechanisms that could potentially revolutionize human health and aging research.
[Gorilla] Primate Intelligence Primatologists made a significant discovery in the 1990s when they observed wild gorillas using tools for foraging. This finding challenged existing notions about primate intelligence and opened new avenues for research in animal cognition.

🎉 Big Announcement! 🎉
I am thrilled to join the team as the new Education Program Manager! 🌿✨
My journey began in Philadelphia, where my passion for nature started as an environmental educator. Over the years, I have used my love for birds to build trust, coalitions, and make a meaningful difference in my community. 🌍❤️
My dedication to wildlife conservation led me to Washington, D.C., where I served as a federal lobbyist, advocating for national efforts in wildlife conservation, outdoor access, and environmental justice. 🏛️🦅
In 2020, I co-created Black Birders Week and co-founded Amplify the Future, a non-profit organization providing scholarships and outdoor education. My leadership and vision in promoting equitable access have brought me to serve on several organizations’ boards of directors. 🌿📚
Now, based outside of Denver, CO, I continue my mission of breaking down barriers to nature’s benefits with Conservation Nation. As Education Program Manager, I am eager to support emerging environmentalists and cultivate a diverse community of eco-champions. 🌟🤝
Follow my adventure at (Follow their account)! Together, we will combat the extinction crisis and foster a more inclusive and equitable environmental movement. 🐦🌱
