When Crystal Torres was injured on the job, Adams County accommodated her by moving her position. But after she was cleared to work without the accommodation, she was asked to reapply for her old position at a rate of $9k less than what she was being paid before the injury. Together, we fought back and won!
“At times, this process felt like punishment or retaliation for being injured. I had to wait for an open position, re-interview, and then negotiate just to get back the salary I had already earned,” Torres explained.
“I am incredibly grateful for the support of AFSCME; they helped the county finally see reason and ensured I could return to my original role with my previous pay. This experience took a heavy toll on my mental and physical health, and I am beyond relieved to have it behind me. I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome.”

During National Library Week, members of AFSCME Colorado recognize library workers for their public service. These workers strengthen the fabric of our communities and create a welcoming place to read, learn, grow, connect and create. They deserve the respect that comes from having a strong collective voice on the job.
“Serving the public is the deep ethic of everyone who works at the library,” said Karen Bowen, an adult literacy program coordinator at Boulder Public Library. “If I feel supported as an employee, I’m more able to support the vulnerable folks I work with.”
Bowen, a member of the organizing committee, and her colleagues are asking the Boulder Public Library District Board of Trustees to establish the policy framework for recognizing their union. A decision could come tomorrow on National Library Workers’ Day.

We are thrilled to welcome back Ashley Bevans and Lorena Sogge to their positions at Southwest Food Excellence. After this mother and her daughter were unjustly terminated, our AFSCME union stood firm. We secured an agreement for their reinstatement at new school locations and back pay for time lost.
As Lorena perfectly put it: “My union dues are worth every penny!” Both of them are union leaders and will be an important part of our bargaining team when negotiations kick off this June. Their strength shows what we can achieve when we stand together. Welcome back!

Lesly Trejo turned to her AFSCME union for help when she was fired from her job in June. It made all the difference. She won her arbitration, including almost $20,000 in back pay plus full reinstatement.
“Thanks to the support and intervention of the members of AFSCME, my labor rights were effectively defended,” Trejo said. “As a result, a favorable resolution was reached that allowed me to return to my job, restoring my job stability and recognizing the importance of following the right processes within employment.”

Having protection on the job makes all the difference. Nicole Casias, an AFSCME member at the Denver Housing Authority, knew where to go for help when she needed it most.
"I experienced firsthand the true value of strong union representation," she said. "The unwavering support, professionalism, and clear guidance I received made a meaningful difference and reinforced my confidence in the strength of our organization. The strength of our union is not defined by words, but by action when it matters most—because in those moments, a strong union doesn’t just stand beside you, it delivers."
When workers come together through AFSCME, we are there to stand up for each other.
