This practice comes at a high cost.

The time burden falls heavily on women and girls, limiting opportunities for education and income generation.

Environmentally, the demand for firewood contributes to deforestation and the loss of vital ecosystems.

No school is too small. After securing our boat, our team hiked 45 minutes into the lush hills of the Peruvian Amazon alongside our locally rooted partner, . High above the river, this village, founded decades ago for its agricultural promise, welcomed us with fresh coconuts.

At the top, we reached a one room schoolhouse with just three students. A place many organizations might overlook, but not us. Because every child deserves access to clean water, and every student deserves the chance to focus, learn, and thrive. We worked side by side with the community, teaching families how to assemble, use, and maintain them for the long term.

Before our hike back to the river, we shared homemade chicken soup together, a simple and powerful reminder of why this work matters. Together we are mighty.
