People notice when branding feels off… even if they can’t explain why. 🎨
Something as small as the wrong shade of green can make a brand feel inconsistent without anyone realizing it. That’s why color accuracy matters more than most people think.
Matching the exact brand hex code keeps everything feeling intentional, polished, and recognizable across every shot, graphic, and frame.
This scene came down to preparation vs reality.
We had two cameras running: a 24mm for the wider frame and a 50mm for coverage, both handheld to give flexibility and allow for quick direction. That freedom was key, especially working with a parent and a child.
Because here’s the truth... you don’t get unlimited takes with kids.
We spent about an hour and a half lighting this setup… for roughly 15 minutes of actual shooting time.
Once we rolled, it was all about moving fast, adjusting in the moment, and capturing what we could while the energy was there.
That’s the balance on shoots like this: prepare as much as possible, then execute quickly when it counts.
Outdoor shoots in Colorado are unpredictable... sun, clouds, and rain all in one day.
The first step was locking the frame quickly so the team could react to the conditions. From there, the challenge was clear:
black car + reflections.
Instead of chasing reflections, we controlled the whole scene. We brought in a 20x frame behind the camera to knock down ambient light and clean up reflections, then added negative fill to create contrast.
A subtle key light (1K through diffusion + grid) was placed carefully so it wouldn’t show in the car, just enough to bring shape and life to the subject’s face.
End of the day, it wasn’t about adding more light... it was about controlling what was already there.
Cam op duty today 🎥
Running the EasyRig to take some weight off the arms and put it where it belongs, on the back. We've got the C400 built up, jumping into some handheld moments between dolly shots. It keeps things light, fast, and mobile, especially on a 135.
Next up: a kid on a bike coming straight at camera. Pulling that focus should be a good time.
The Idea Marketing
This setup was all about control.
We used the natural window light as a base and shaped it with a soft key close to the talent.
Clouds came in at the perfect time and gave us the contrast we needed.
You don’t always fight the environment... sometimes you work with it.
The Shot vs The Result
Today we’re shooting on the Cooke S7 full-frame cinema lenses.
They’ve got that warm, soft look with just enough character to make the footage feel elevated... not overly sharp, not flat.
Perfect for creating visuals that actually feel cinematic.

Here's how that great shot was set up 🔥

Shooting indoors with little to no natural light can be both a gift and a curse 🎥
On one hand, you’re not fighting the sun moving every 10 minutes or clouds constantly changing your exposure. You get full control of the scene. Every highlight, every shadow, every bit of contrast is intentional.
But that also means everything is on you. If the lighting isn’t right, the shot won’t feel right.
For this interview setup, we built the entire look from scratch. We were able to shape the light to create a soft, natural feel while keeping the subject separated from the background.
Great lighting doesn’t just help you see the subject. It sets the mood of the entire image.
The difference between a flat shot and a cinematic one often comes down to how you shape the light. 🎬
Setup:

🎥 Canon C70 - B Cam
💡 Aputure 1200X
💡 Light Dome for soft key lighting
Early call, big shot 🌅🎥
We’ve got a jib set on top of this massive slide structure, yes, I tested the slide myself, and the plan is pure motion. A kid drops in, we ride the slide from their perspective, then lift up and reveal the zoo and the city as the sun sits low behind it all.
Backlit, smooth camera movement, real energy. One of those shots where timing, light, and perspective line up just right. Can’t wait to see this one come together.
