Denver — The Colorado Department of Transportation and Mothers Against Drunk Driving announced the winners of the 2026 Law Enforcement Champion awards for the Front Range during an awards ceremony at Empower Field this week. These awards focus on efforts to reduce impaired driving, increase the use of seat belts and reduce speeding.

A law enforcement champion is an individual who shows outstanding support for impaired driving, traffic safety or occupant protection enforcement. This can be demonstrated by the number of dangerous drivers removed from the roadways or arrests made during the established enforcement periods throughout the year. It can also be demonstrated by drug recognition expert activity, high visibility enforcement tactics and other related activities.
Awards will be presented to law enforcement champions in the western region of the state in Grand Junction this July.
Approximately one-third of traffic fatalities involve an impaired driver in Colorado. In addition, most traffic fatalities involve an unbuckled driver or passenger. Seat belts save an estimated 225 lives in Colorado each year. An additional 70 lives could have been saved if everyone in Colorado buckled up. The current seat belt use rate is 90.7%.
CDOT provides funding to Colorado law enforcement for impaired driving and seat belt enforcement campaigns. The Heat Is On campaign runs throughout the year with 15 specific high visibility impaired driving enforcement periods centered on national holidays and large public events. Enforcement periods can include sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols and additional law enforcement on duty dedicated to impaired driving enforcement.
There are three high visibility seat belt enforcement periods that take place each year in Colorado.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) -Two new Colorado laws aimed at cracking down on careless and impaired driving were signed Thursday during a stop at the Colorado Springs Police Department.
One of the new laws gives district attorneys the option to charge negligent drivers who cause a fatal crash with a Class 5 felony. Supporters say the change closes a gap in state law that previously forced prosecutors to choose between a top-level misdemeanor or a lower-level felony charge in some cases.
Teri Bogel, whose husband was killed in a hit-and-run crash in 2019, said the previous penalties did not reflect the devastating impact reckless driving can have on families.
“A lot of times people may view it as only a cyclist or only a pedestrian,” Bogel said. “But we’re all vulnerable road users at some point.”
The governor also signed a second law focused on impaired driving prevention.
The measure requires first-time DUI offenders to install ignition interlock devices in their vehicles. The devices prevent a car from starting if the driver’s blood alcohol concentration is above prohibited levels.
The law also removes a previous two-month waiting period some DUI offenders faced before being able to apply for the devices.
Renee Lund, whose son was killed by a drunk driver in 2022, spoke in support of the legislation at Thursday’s signing event.
Speaking of the driver in her son’s case, Lund said she believes the new changes to Colorado’s DUI laws could help save lives in the future.
“With this new law, if he would have had that interlock system in his car, there’s a pretty good chance that my son would still be alive,” Lund said.
The new DUI law takes effect June 1, 2027.

The Colorado Impaired Driving Professional Assistance Request (CIDPAR) is a program of the Colorado Highway Safety Office (CHSO) at the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). CIDPAR was created to provide law enforcement, prosecutors, probation professionals, judicial officers, and allied partners with direct access to specialized impaired driving resources and professional support throughout Colorado.
Through CIDPAR, professionals can quickly request assistance from:
* The Colorado SFST/DRE State Coordinator
* Impaired Driving-focused Prosecutors
* Judicial Liaison Officers
* Other impaired driving subject matter experts and partner resources
CIDPAR is designed to streamline communication, strengthen collaboration, and ensure agencies and professionals have timely access to impaired driving expertise and support.

* Technical Assistance
* Library Materials
* Training
* Other Professional Needs

Simply complete the online CIDPAR request form. Once submitted, the request will be reviewed and directed to the appropriate professional or partner for follow-up assistance.
